I believe you're our first iPhone user so we (at least me) have no idea.

Mine too.   I had two phones going through activation at 6:30pm EDT, and nothing more has happened except "Your activation requires additional time".

????? Any ideas?

Patience ...

Sounds like the activation system is on overload ... My guess is no carrier has EVER activated so many phones in such a short period of time and the computers are just not keeping up with the workload ...

There are several users on another forum that are having the same issue.  Calling AT&T doesn't seem to be getting them anywhere.  I would imagine porting takes longer if you're bringing your number over.  I would guess it's a system overload as well.  I feel bad for you all though.

Add another...spent time waiting to talk with AT&T rep, after 45 minutes no rep, went to the on-line chat, no help but referred to Apple tech support (obviously, no help since they have nothing to do with activation), Apple tech gave me "AT&T activation support number" (877 419-4500) and got the message "We are experiencing technical difficulties and cannot complete your call, please try again later".

Now, my Treo 650 SIM card is deactivated and no iPhone activation...nice job with this AT&T. I can understand how a high volume of activation can muck things up but one would think that they would have anticipated this. Hopefully, I be able to be patient enough to not go too crazy without either being activated...

Same situation. I'm an existing ATT customer so no number migration. Been waiting since a little after 8. Old phone doesn't work now and ATT activation support has no estimate. I decided to do this at work b/c the Apple store is just down the street. Can't take the thing home to finish activation cuz I don't have Internet service at home. So, I'm stuck here waiting.

Do ATT reps monitor these forums? How can we get info about when the congestion should clear up?

OK... just got back from store (after actually purchasing the iPhone around 6:00pm) to see what the heck is going on.  Basically, if you are a new AT&T subscriber, you're first in queue and getting on-line and activated within minutes.  Existing ATT/Cingular customers are all experiencing extremely long wait times.  Myself included.

This blows.   AT&T should be ashamed.  Steve Jobs should be furious.

Activate it yourself?

From the FAQ

Q. How do I activate iPhone?
A.
You activate iPhone in a whole new way—using iTunes right on your computer. All you need is a PC or Mac, a credit card or debit card, access to the Internet and an email address.

The credit approval for your AT&T service also happens on your computer. It’s part of activating through iTunes, but if you’d rather have your credit pre-approved before you leave the store, an AT&T store representative can help you with that.

You will also select an available plan during activation.

Q. How long does it take to activate iPhone?
A.
Most activations should happen within a few minutes of selecting your plan. If there are any questions around your account status or credit, there may be delays in activation.
