Ithink Iphone = Ibrick. No Iactivation.

Let's review.................

Waited months like an I-moron for this thing to come out, waited all day yesterday outside in 91+ degree heat (again, like a moron), 6pm EST rolled around and yahoooo!!!!!! Got my 8 gig Iphone......

Same freakin' thing. Personal account, nothing weird, existing Cingular/AT&T customer, account in good standing, etc.....and at 47 minutes past 6pm I did the activation.....got the following notice.

Sorry, your account requires additional time to complete.

It is now 9am the following morning and still no activation. Makes the failed Windows Vista rollout look like a work of genius. If Steve Jobs isn't regretting entrusting this project to AT&T right now he should be. Black eye for Apple via "guilt by association"

I am one who also asked weeks before if everything was "good to go" for changing to the Iphone.....not even porting number from another carrier or anything like that, just activating it 47 minutes after release. It's now 11:22pm EST and my IBrick that s*cked the life out of me waiting in the heat, is now sitting s*cking the life out of my USB port and doing nothing else.

Meanwhile, Cingular's system in preparing for the move, has deactivated the SIM card on my phone which all my business calls roll over to after hours and on weekends. Great, going straight to visual voicemail I can't see, respond to, or do anything about. Guess that makes me an ITool for buying into the hype and giving them my $600+.

With all of the hype you'd think AT&T would have done the math.....instead my guess is it went something like this......

Hey guys, Steve Jobs from Apple called our CEO and wants to work with us this new phone product they are going to release...Let's see, the initial release is something like 3 million Iphones, let's say 1/2 are 4 gig and 1/2 are 8 gig, that gives us a total take of oh, I don't know......$1,650,000,000....YES 1.65 BILLION DOLLARS.......this might be good!

BUT WAIT! Let's review the business plan further though just to be sure. We can't turn on a single news channel nationwide, late night talk show, or talk radio show that they aren't talking about the Iphone without compensation for doing so. Every tech magazine and forum online is buzzing with "I can't wait to get one" comments. Kids are hiring themselves out as IWait people charging to stand in line for busy folks to get them and Iphone. The Ipod changed the entire face of music delivery forever and has set sales records for product roll outs world wide......you think we ought to make sure our activation servers can handle, oh I don't know, 3 million activations in a matter of let's say, the 3 hours it takes for the sun to travel from the east to west coast and 6pm to hit all the time zones in the USA? Hmmmmmmmmmmm......tick tock tick tock.....

Nah, there probably won't be that much demand, we'll just go with a half-a** solution, like have our folks work a little overtime to answer the phone and apologize. Much less expensive. Let's blow off the biggest phone product release in remembered history.

GREAT PLAN GUYS!

Meanwhile I have no cell service and have been on hold for nearly 2 hours at the time of this post trying to get a human being on the phone at THE NEW AT&T.

You are absolutely correct!  The lack of experience I think is the problem, I think they hire new people for this who are incompetent to handle all of this activations.  Not only is the iphone waiting for activation but the original phone now has an unregistered SIM card!! We can not use one or the other!!!  I think they new this was going to happen that is why they did it for the weekend.  I'm appalled with this situation!!!

I don't think you understand. Apple isn't at fault, AT&T is the ONLY person(s) at fault here. Apple just created the technology+the PHYSICAL phone.

AT&T created the rates, we are using THERE EDGE (why no 3G I'm not sure)Connection and THERE the cause of no emails getting to us.

iTunes is simply Internet Explorer with a "mask" over it, iTunes is not the problem either for this email problem.

AT&T obviously didn't even see this comming.

Ifrustrated

You know, there's a line between playing with a new toy and causing a problem with business.......if I just had to wait to activate the Iphone, but my old "Get 'er Done" Blackberry 8800 was still working, would not be a big deal at all. But since the old sim card is deactivated now and the new one doesn't work my customers won't get taken care of due to no fault of our own. Trickle down on this reaches much further than playing with the new Iphone. Regretting I put my trust in AT&T on this one big-time. Finally got someone on the phone and the latest is

1. up to 24 hours for it to work
2. suggestion was tearing open the Iphone and removing the SIM to put in the Blackberry, however no instructions in Iphone box on how to do that and the tech on the phone still had not seen an Iphone herself, so had no suggestion on how to do it without breaking something.
3. AT&T is now blaming the Apple activation system and stating that when we did the activation the reason it says "additional time" and the old phone doesn't work is that AT&T did their part of the job and the system is waiting for the response from Apple's system which is not posting back to them correctly.
4. Again, Apple kept it so secret that AT&T's own tech support people IN MANY CASES HAVE NOT EVEN SEEN THE PHONE THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO PROVIDE SUPPORT ON ACCORDING TO LAST PHONE CALL.....

Don't really care, just want a phone that works at this point. Am heading to AT&T store in a few to return Iphone and get my existing one working again.

Very IFrustrated with IBrick and ISnafu. Isupport for Iphone {Please do not go around the word filter}. At bare minimum Iphone customers should get a 1 month service credit for buying into this whole I-mess.

How is Apple not @ fault?  This is only phone AT&T has ever released that's had to work with a third party (in this case, Apple) activation program.  AT&T created the rate plans, but it was an Apple design decision to only include an EDGE radio instead of a 3G one.  I've had numerous phones with BellSouth Mobility and Cingular and AT&T, and I've never had a hitch activating one.

iTunes is a whole lot more than IE with a "mask" over it.  It might be browser based, but there's a lot more going on behind the scenes that you realize.  Personally, the whole activation through iTunes is a bit of a joke, since iTunes has to interface with the AT&T activation system to perform the credit check.

Again, there's more than enough blame on all sides to go around for this.  I don't know what level of testing AT&T and Apple performed on their combined activation system, but they obviously didn't do enough load testing to ensure that it would handle the volume of initial applications.  Think they're the only having this problem?  Have you been on MySpace between about 7 p.m. ET and midnight PT?

Gee imagine this:  the feds split up AT&T as they monoplizes incompetence. So AT&T buys back one of the baby bells, unfortunately for us- Cingular is part of Bell South. The very first major project they roll out - customer disaster! I will not be surprised when Webster's Dictionary lists the AT&T logo listed as a synonym for incompetence.

That's exactly what I did. I went to the att store and after much complaining they gave me a new sim for my BB. They restored my plan to a BB plan and I went to the Apple store to return the iphone. Apple also waived the re-stocking fee. Oh well, that was a fun 12 hours (NOT)
