At my current carrier I can suspend my service for a small fee and avoid paying the monthly contract fee. Can I suspend my service for 6 months while I am in Switzerland as an AT&T customer? This is the only issue keeping me from purchasing an iPhone.
That would be the Reduced Rate Suspend (RRS) allows you to voluntarily suspend your wireless service {Not Applicable to Prepaid services} on a temporary basis for $10 a month for six consecutive months (plus all add on features that have a monthly service cost, also the iPhone data plan can not be removed and will be billed monthly). There are certain requirements that must be met in order to be eligible for RRS; so please re-contact customer service to see if you are eligible to suspend your account using the RRS feature. also Calls will ring the phone but route to VM and the person can leave a voicemail, you can also retrieve the voicemail from a phone other than the wireless, any use of the phone for outbound or answered inbound calls (including 911 and 611) will reactivate the line of service again and resume normal billing, also if you have any charged features such as insurance or roadside assistance on the account without removing them before the suspension you will be billed for those as well as the $10 monthly fee for the suspension.

I am in a similar position- will be out of the country, don't want to pay for cell service that I will not use, and want to keep my current phone number. The difference is that I will be out of the country for more than 6 months, probably 9-10. Can the RSS plan be extended to ten months? Alternatively, could I switch to a prepaid plan and then not use it for ten months? My two year contract with ATT is up, so I suppose I have the option of taking my number to a new service provider that would charge less than $10 a month to hold my phone number while I am away. I'd prefer not to do this since it would entail activation fees, etc. Thanks

Since you are out of contract, you can switch to the prepaid, add $100 to the account and leave it there — the account & money will last for a year. When you return in 9-10 months, switch back to postpaid and the $100 will be applied to the postpaid account as credit.

I did this feature a few months ago for a 1 month period. After calling to get it reinstated, the CS Rep said there was no $10 charge and this doesn't exist anymore. After looking at my bill for that month, I was charged the full plan & feature rate. My plan is the basic 450 mins with the RAZR2 phone. I feel I'm owed some money for false representation.

Same thing happen to me. When I switched to AT&T, I asked about this service and said you can do it!! Now, They are asking for the full fee of the plan plus 5$ administration fee for the suspension. I don't think that I will stay with AT&T after this experiance
