I've noticed (and confirmed with one other device) that new email notification sound does not work if the device is in standby. It does make a sound if the device is on. LED notifications seem to work in standby and powered on. Does anyone know of a workaround for this? It's really irritating to not know of new emails while the phone is in my pocket.

You are 100% correct. I have notifications on for new email. When the device is on you can hear the notification. When the phone is in standby it does not make noise but the icon blinks for a couple of seconds. This is a HUGE flaw. It makes you wonder why they do not test simple features like this before releasing a product. Another thing I do not like is my BJ II takes me to the top of my email list when I open 'Messaging'. The Epix takes you to where you last were in the list. You have to scroll up to see new emails. Even works there is no scrolling on Epix. You have to either use the optical mouse to push the scroll bar up to the top or you have to use the stylus to move the scroll bar up. I wonder why the up/down keys to not let you scroll like every other WM Pro device. SeanH

I reported the email notification issue to Samsung (call 888-987-4357 if you would like to pile on). AE Button Plus (http://ae.inc.ru/aebplus.php) seems to work really well to remap the volume up/down keys to up/down. This lets you scroll in apps and still have the mouse pointer enabled.

I can confirm this is a problem on my Epix as well.
This is a HUGE problem. I have never seen a WMpro device with this problem!
It is as though the alert option is somehow hard coded. Even when I tell it to play a sound ONLY (no light, no vibe), the phone still will not alert in standby - all it does is blink the light....EVEN THOUGH THE FLASH LIGHT OPTION IS UNCHECKED!!!
Inound SMS and Phone calls do bring the phone out of standby and alert properly....this problem is just with email.
This pretty much ruins the phone for me. What is the point of push email if I don't get alerted as new items come in?
Too bad because otherwise I love the phone.

I was on the phone with Samsung for almost 2 hours about this issue. The first support person kept trying to tell me that I purchased the phone in Europe and that they didn’t support them in the US. I finally got to talk to a level 3 support person and he checked but didn’t see any type of issue that had been opened like this. So he opened a support case and will be sending it to their engineering department.
Looks like Quality Assurance would have found this bug before it went out the door, unless AT&T added something to it. I think I’ll give them a call too. Does anyone know if this is only related to Exchange ActiveSync or does it also happen with POP/IMAP?

I know it happens with ActiveSync. I have not tried it with POP/IMAP. It also happens with Hotmail if you load the Windows Live client. I called Samsung on Friday. I told the lady that "I think I've found a big in the Epix phone." She shouted back "You found WHAAAT?" So I had to explain the concept of a bug to her. The end result was a ticket # and that I needed to call back Monday (today) to talk to ECR (executive customer relations). I called back today and provide the ticket # and requested to transfer to ECR. The person on the phone started asking if I had gotten the phone wet, dropped it, or damaged it. She asked if I went to an AT&T store to work with a salesperson there to troubleshoot the issue (worthless). She then offered that I could return the phone to AT&T if I wanted. I politely pressed that I wanted to get this issue fixed and keep the phone, so she supposedly transfered me to ECR. I was on hold and hit option 5 to leave a message for a callback. Nothing happens. I literally waited on hold for 30 minutes and never heard a live human being. I really like this form factor, but there are just so many bugs and their support is horrendous!

I tried this app (AE Button Plus) and it seems to work great at first. I was especially impressed that it allowed me to continue to control volume on calls while letting me scroll in other apps. However, the button assignments randomly stop working after a day or two. I'll open email, hit the down button to scroll, and the volume will change. When I go back into the program, the settings are still there: "Change volume or... Press up arrow key." I have to un-do the settings, save and exit, then enter the program again to re-do them. Then it works again (for a day or two). My question is: does anyone else experience this? Is this a way for the developer to get me to give him $8? I'll be happy to do that as soon as I am sure that the program works as advertised. Also - has anyone notcied other shortcut buttons not working? Sometimes I'll hit the calendar button and and get a pop-up with "Shortcut Target" indicating there was an error opening the shortcut or locating the file. If I go into the button customization (not AE Button Plus) , change the shortcut to a different app, then change it back, everything is fine. I am not sure if this is related to having AE Button Plus installed or something else. Has anyone else had this happen?

I noticed this problem as well. I get emails all day and the last thing I need is the phone telling me each time. However, it appears that the LCD remains off when the screen notification appears - the next time I turn it on, the left softkey will be "notification" and will let me know how many unread emails I have. Since the LCD does not seem to be turning on (which would kill my battery in a typical workday), it does not bother me too much. Still, it is weird how the phone keeps putting that checkbox back. Another example of poor quality control & testing (like the LCD flashing - or lack thereof).
