While it would be easy to flame away at the problems/bugs on this phone, I would like to ask Sentry some serious questions so I can make informed decisions: With the known problems on the email alert, and them being reported by users and reviews, is there actions being taken to fix them by Samsung and are they being proded by AT&T? Is this phone, as a person at our local store said, just a phone people want to text with and look cool, or a workhorse? If it is just a text machine, the alerts work, no problem. Tell the rest of us and we will make the choice of another phone that tells us when recieve emails that pertain to our business/livihood. There seems to be no effort from anyone to keep us informed on the progress, and mushrooming us makes me wonder what, if anything is going on. Could this turn into another blackjack tribulation? I hope not. Thanks, Sentry. You have always told us as much as you can. I have 20 days left before my 30 are up. I don't usually jump ship with the rats, but at the present they are offering a pretty good package deal.

I have a couple more days to decide, and right now I'm leaning toward replacing it with a different phone. The issues around mail notification when "sleeping", screen coming on at seemingly random times, and other annoying behaviors are just a bit overwhelming when I think about a phone that I'm going to ENJOY using for a while.
It's just too much of a struggle...

I really don't think people are looking at the big picture here in regards to the sleep mode on the Samsung Epix. Of course the phone isn't going to be able to receive messages while in sleep mode. The sleep mode is an additional feature of the phone to preserve battery life, not a neccesity. If you are that concerned about received your business related emails at all seconds of the day, turn the Sleep mode off, turn the backlight to Power Save, etc. Utilize other methods to conserve battery life. Simple as that.

All I can say is that you guys have received a batch that may have an old image on them. I have been testing this phone for CareAce.net for a month before it went live and I have not had a problem with them. I'm frustrated as you are.

The phone DOES receive messages while in sleep/standby mode - there's just no notification about them. If you manually bring the phone out of standby if an e-mail was received while in standby you'll see the notification icons and message notification on the top and bottom of the screen. Calls and SMS bring the phone out of standby and turn on the screen and audibly alert you. E-mail and IM notifications do not. Why? - a programming bug that needs to be fixed.
Monorail, how do you turn off the screen without the phone going into standby? The power key on the left side of the phone appears to not only turn off the screen but put it in standby too. I've also experimented with unchecking "Turn off device if not used for... x minutes" on the Power settings > Advanced tab - and resorted to manually pressing the power button to "turn off the LCD". Same result.
From the manual...
Command Keys Power On/Off Key 1. Press and hold the Power On/Off key ( ) [located on the left side of the phone (near the top)] to turn the phone on or off. 2. To turn your LCD off/on, press the Power On/Off key ( ) once until the backlight turns off/on.
...but again the button appears to put the phone in standby too. Or maybe e-mail audio alerts just don't work while the LCD is off?
Yesterday I installed a 3rd party alert manager (phoneAlarm), and now at least the phone will vibrate and flash the LED when I receive an e-mail while in standby, and I've set a reminding alarm to go off every few minutes while in standby in case I miss the first vibrating/LED alerts. E-mail alert tones still don't work while in standby.

I came to the forum to specifically search for a solution to this problem. This is an OS problem related to modifications that either Samsung or AT&T (or both) made to the ROM. Its been experienced with a couple of other devices and the fix has always come with a ROM upgrade. Is a moderator monitoring this thread? How can we escalate this problem up to Samsung or AT&T device development to get them to investigate it? Kind Regards, Christopher Spera Gear Diary Review Team
