I go to school in Michigan, but I live in Canada and now I'm home for the summer. I don't know what to do about my phone.
Can I extend my plan so that I can call and text people in both the States and Canada without paying any long distance charges? And if I can, would my friends in either the States or Canada have to pay long distance charges to call and text me?

ATT's nation plus Canada plan will extend your coverage area into Canada. You will have a US number, therefore US callers will pay the same rate as if you were in the United States. Canadian parent collars will pay the same as if they were calling United States. some Canadian plans include free texting to the United States, others do not. If you have an apple or an android phone, look at text plus for Canada. It just came out, and usually virtual Canadian phone number for texting and receiving phone calls.
