How does it work? I have an LG Quantum and I wanted to know if I put it on the unlimited plan how would it work? I'm planning on doing the 50 dollar a month unlimited plan mixed with the 15 dollar a month Data package, will this drain my Data or is this seperate? I'm asking because of the lack of information on this site about the unlimited plans, I will call them if I get no answers.

I also have the $50 unlimited plan and to use Navigator you would have to pay 3 dollars for a 24 hour pass or 10 for a month. Not to sure on this but I don't think it will drain any of your data.

I believe if you are using AT&T Navigator with a smartphone, the data usage from Navigator will be deducted from your additional data feature package allotment. Smartphones do not receive the unlimited data inherent in the $50 "Unlimited" plan, and AFAIK, the monthly subscription fee for AT&T Navigator doesn't cover it's data usage.
It certainly wouldn't hurt to call and try to get a knowledgeable rep who seems to be able to provide an informed answer; but my gut is that you won't *really* know without just trying it to see if the Navigator data usage is being deducted from your specific data allotment balance.
(Or hopefully the Navigator specialist that helps out here on occasion can provide a definitive answer.)

This was a timely post - thank you! I was just getting ready to come "find" you as I'm thinking of moving my AT&T Navigator from my post paid plan (I have the Nokia E-7 now and OviMaps is built-in/free with it.) to my prepaid account (on the SE W518a) - as I thought you'd said I could use it over there on just an "as needed, daily use" basis. ![]()
Granted - I believe the data usage will be deducted from my data feature balance, but I have tons built up; and the $50 unlimited package is truly available to the W518a as well since it is not a smartphone. (I expect the W518a to continue to be used as a backup/smaller, less expensive device to worry about when I don't really *need* the full keyboard of the Nokia).

Hme83, when I first signed up with AT&T I was on their $60 unlimited talk & text plan and out of curiosity I activated Navigator, I paid the $10 for the month. And I wish I could recall accurately but I don't remember being charged for any data use, since on that plan data was a pay-per-use basis I don't remember if anything was deducted from my account. I could be wrong though.

I'm not really certain either if you are on a limited allotment data plan - it does appear that my data usage for AT&T Navigator is being "charged" against my post paid data plan in looking at my at&t billing details. (The days I was recently traveling and using AT&T Navigator, my data usage is off the charts in terms of my "normal" data usage every other day of the month. And especially considering that since I was traveling, I wasn't doing the things I normally do all day long (e-mail) that utilize data.) But since I have an unlimited data plan, it doesn't really matter if the data is "charged" against my allotment or not; but it would matter if you are on a limited allotment plan.

Is your prepaid account the $50 unlimited plan or is that the plan you are going to switch to?

Since I have tons of data rollover built up anyway, my initial intent would be just to continue with the existing voice plan and utilize my data rollover. (I'm still on the old $1/day with free MTM and no daily charge for anything other than voice usage, and I hate to give that rate plan up.)
It's unlikely that the $50 unlimited plan would ever be economically justifiable unless the phone/line of service is just transferred to a family member for their use. But even then, based on their usage pattern, I don't see an "all you can eat" plan as being the way to go. Too many components of it would go virtually unused and you lose the ability to build/use "rollover" to allow you to move to less expensive feature plans for a period of time, which helps reduce your average cost of service over time.

Hme83, I do recall the location indicator icon on my phone blinking red whenever I used Navigator, not sure if that's an indication of data usage or just that it was accessesing a satellite signal. Also, maybe it was just because I wasn't all that familiar with the feature but Navigator for me was a bit slow.

That's interesting - as on my post paid plan, Navigator is the one area where I've really been pleased with the data speed performance of the W518a. Everything else I'd call "slow" (internet, e-mail, etc.) even though the phone depicts the 3G indicator and I do have simultaneous voice and data (that benefit of 3G is of little to no value for me as I rarely use voice). But I've consistently been amazed that with the 3D maps/voice navigation turned on, the mapping is spot on without even a fraction of a second delay - every single time I've used Navigator, no matter where I've been.

My phone is about 3 years old, so could it be that I have an older version of Navigator, or are they all the same? I wonder if I had tinkered around with the settings if that would have any difference. I did think Navigator was a pretty coolfeature, but I have no real need for it so I cancelled my subscription.

I don't know that I'd be willing to spend $10/month for it, but since I've had it on the post paid acount for only an incremental cost of $5/month, I've felt it has well paid for itself over the course of time, even if I'm not using it often. But if I do decide to make some account changes based on moving the SE to prepaid service, the daily use fee is what will make the most sense - in all likelihood it would be used even less frequently over there (but nice to know it is available when I want/need to carry the smaller/less expensive phone).

Ilikewireless, in another post you mentioned Google Navigation, is that similar to Navigator? Do you get turn by turn directions and traffic updates?

Yes. I get turn by turn voice instruction with Google Navigation. Just before I reached my destination, Google showed me a view of the entrance to the driveway - cool.
By the way, I watched a video of the at&t Navigator. I was quite impressed with the extra convenience of the Navigator. But that would be $10 extra to use.
I don't get routed around heavy traffic with Google Navigation as far as I know. Maybe the $10 fee of the at&t Navigator is partly for the traffic update and rerouting, and partly for the enhancement of features.

I have a Google app named "Map" that I can use to find places near me, like restaurants, coffee, bars, attractions, ATMs, Gas Stations, and nearby places of interest to visitors and local residents. There's also an Android app "where" that is free to download from the Android Market.
