ATT to DOUBLE UPGRADE FEE on SUNDAY!! For WHAT???

Is the fee for a new phone and to keep ur contract for another 24 months?
Or is it on top of a higher upgrade price say you opted for a iPhone $199.99?

The RIDICULOUS $36 fee is to upgrade your phone for a new one and extend your contract for 24 months.

I know some people who won't sign a contract unless they can walk out with a free phone. There goes that option. Not a smart move in my opinion.

What's a FREE phone anymore? My husband hasn't upgraded in a few years. I don't believe that I even noticed ANY phones offered for "FREE".

I think in all of my years with ATT, I have gotten free phones in the past once once twice but not anymore ....once was when ATT switched to SIM cards and I was forced into having to get a new phone...

Less and less free phones now that smartphones are so popular. <br><br>I would feel like I wasted money if I paid the upgrade fee and signed a two year contract. That's insane. What is att thinking.

To tell you the truth, mostly ALL were smartphones, VERY few dumbphones and a handful of messaging phones in my particular ATT corp store. NOT everyone needs/wants a smartphone.... 

No matter which phone people choose to upgrade to, the fact remains that they will be socked with that IDIOTIC $36 upgrade fee...

I haven't heard about raising the restocking fee but if they did it wouldn't be a smart move at all.

I haven't heard that either...and NO, it certainly would NOT be a smart move. I wonder if anyone else has posted about the increase in the upgrade fee?? I'll have to search around. I thought there would be a zillion complaints on this forum about it by now.

don't bother with ATT customer service..

one agent told me they doubled the upgrade fee then another agent told me it was because I canceled an upgrade  before it was shipped out.

Either way its bullcap.. ATT is going to lose customers no matter what.  The only reason I stick with them is because I got my unlimited data and am going to milk them for it each month now

Yes, I totally agree with you that it's bullcrap. It doesn't sound as if the CSR that you spoke to even knows what is going on! Maybe some of them weren't informed of it either, like the rest of us.

The upgrade fee has been doubled..maybe you should call back and inform them so they're on the same page. It has nothing to do with what you cancelled before it was shipped out.

Here is my problem.  At&t you need to MAN UP (or woman up) and INCLUDE the MANDATORY FEES in your prices.  This is really what chaps my rear end when a company prices something (airlines say) and then hits you with "mandatory fees" that you HAVE to pay in order to complete the transacation (purchase).

You see I can't walk out of an AT&T store, or have a phone shipped to me if I buy it through AT&T unless I pay the $36 upgrade fee.  So if its MANDATORY then you need to include it in your price.  

I know why you DON'T!  Because VERIZON doesn't currently charge an upgrade fee and when a customer is comparing prices they just look at the plan costs and the phone costs.  So an IPHONE 4S might appear to be $199 at both carriers, but at At&t it's really $236,

Of all the forum hopping that I do, I never realized that VZW didn't charge upgrade fees.  Of all the companies to have a customer-friendly practice (when compared to the competition), I never would have thought that it would have been VZW!

I was trying to upgrade my daughters' line since her phone was no longer working.  The Customer Service person said that even though I was early (upgrade was not due until June) they would send me a refurbished Samsung smart phone free.  However toward the end of the call, the phone was really going to cost me a $36 upgrade fee, $9.95 shipping plus and sales taxes of $37.80.  This made the "free" phone over $80. plus I  would have to upgrade to a data plan and two year commitment.  Instead I went to a used wireless store and they had a new phone that would work for $60.  I am very unhappy with AT&T that they have increased their upgrade fee, and even though I have been with them since 1999 I am going to check other vendors once my commitment is up in June.
