I have gone through the setting and was unable to turn off 4G. I would love to have the option when i need to preserve battery life...

The 4G on your phone is nothing more than enhanced 3G, so there its no option. It uses the same part of the 3G tower

You have to go back to 2G EDGE mode to get the power saving (and lost simultanous voice and data capability).
