I've had my phone for about week now, and I loved it...until I started reading kindle again at night with the lights off. I use black background when I read to save battery power thinking black=pixel off. I've done this on my captivate and gs2. When there are a full page of words on it, everything looks fine, and black looks black.
Then I noticed this on the gs3. When I flipped to an empty page and then I immediately noticed that black is not really black. It's a very dark gray like you would see on an LCD (but much darker). OK, that's not really a problem for me.
And then I noticed this black s-shaped line at the bottom half of my screen. Looking at the display closer, I also notice these black dots in other areas too. I took a pic with my DSLR in my closet, but unfortunately I can't post it. I also tried different apps (like paint joy and a powerpoint that has a black rectangle filling the page) that would give me a black screen, and sure thing...always there. I can't see it once I turn the lights back on, or when there are colors on the screen near it to hide it. It's annoying as I read a lot in the dark.
I took a pic with my DSLR in a dark room. If you look closely, the s-shaped line is on the right side of the pic. If you can't see it, try letting your eyes adjust to the black or adjust your monitor brightness/contrast.
Does your screen look like that? I've read this may be a problem with AMOLED displays, and I found someone's pic of the Motorolar RAZR that had similar artifacts.
Question is: does your display have this issue? If every AMOLED display have this, then I won't bother exchanging for another, as it may be worst.

I lightened up the image so the defect you describe is easier to see, but I don't know what the cause is.

I've seen many reports of these "ink dots" on the SGS III screens. It seems pretty widespread, so you may have to exchange several times to find one that is bearable.

That's the nature of the beast. It has always been an issue with SAMOLED. My Samsung GSII has them. My GNex has them. It seems like the higher the resolution gets the more noticeable. You're always going to find them on SAMOLED displays so it's best to find one that has the least or bothers you the least. I find the lines to be very annoying but the random speckles seem less bothersome.
The other thing that bothers me about SAMOLED but most folks don’t notice is the hue. It seem like they can never get it right. If you line up a few GSIII’s together, I bet you’ll notice each display has a different Hue. One will look warm (Yellow) while the other looks cool (Blue) and the other may fall more in the middle. That also drives me nuts.
The colors and contrast are wonderful on SAMOLEDs. I still prefer HTC One X’s LCD because of these issues that seem to plague SAMOLED.

Mine has a few splotches as well. From what I have heard, all of them are affected.
