They HAVE had training on the desire, so it is looking like they will in fact get the phone.... The chosen search and e-mail apps are *drumroll please*.... GOOGLE!!!!!!!! Gmail will be able to support direct push of MULTIPLE gmail accounts (more than 2). They are planning for a MAY release date, but are pushing for April. And for those who's hands are as big as mine and hate the fact that Android phones only rotate to landscape when editing a message, it looks like there will in fact be a pseudo-universal landscape mode on the phone (though she wasn't 100% sure about that part).
Hope this makes everyone as excited as it has me!

i'm not trying to say you're wrong on this but they said the same thing about the backflip in january. it had google but then a week before the release people find out its now yahoo. i really hope you're right and at&t wised up but i don't believe anything from at&t until it really happens or comes out. i emailed at&t a week ago and this is what i got back.
Thank you for taking the time to e-mail AT&T regarding your dissatisfaction with our first Android phone the Backflip and want details about our future Android phones. its sad too because for me i love at&t coverage in my area, i live in NY and some of my friends have verizon and they have way more dead zones than me. but i'm just growing so tired of at&t falling so short on their phones. and i'm giving them till the end of may and if they don't come out with a great android i'm leaving. i think my ETF should be $80-85 by then. i had 5 of my friends leave at&t last year and all of them have android phones from verizon or sprint. 2 of them were former iphone owners and they love android

You may be right and the phone comes out in early summer, I decided not to wait the Nexus phone will only cost me at the maximum 300.00 more than the potential At&t "pig in the poke" Desire phone. Now if At&t would give me free activation and I thought the phone was'nt going be locked out of using non At&t certificate software I would wait.

I decided to wait I am not too interested in the 4g connection where i live the edge connection is as fast as the 3g (at least it seems)
I like the Iphone well enough except the calendar stinks and you have to jump through hoops to personalize the darn thing.

I'm surprised no one has posted this yet, but Google has added an AT&T compatible version of the Nexus One to their online site. You can get what is effectively the same phone as the Desire without AT&T "improving" your user experience by replacing Google with Yahoo and locking down some of the features to AT&T-approved options.
Google is charging $529 for the unlocked version of the phone.
AT&T's Desire will probably be subsidized and cost around $200.
If AT&T can restrain itself, the Desire is a better deal. You're gonna pay the subsidy whether you use it or not. The HTC Sense UI gets better reviews than Google's default UI.
Hey AT&T -- you keep sending me ads in the mail and email to switch phones since I've had this one over 3 years and still have a Cingular contract. If you don't muck around with the Desire, you've got cash on the way...

AT&T getting the Desire with Google is the best news I heard all day.
I think it is worth waiting to see if AT&T converts the Desire into Discard like they converted the Backflip into Backflop. LOL, couldnt resist ![]()

Naw... the best news is that if the Desire is "backflipped" you can always get the unlocked Nexus One (AT&T version) which is 99% the same. The biggest difference that I can see is that the Desire comes with an optical mouse and the Sense UI. The Nexus One comes with a rollerball mouse and the default UI.
I've read that someone has ported Sense to the Motorola Droid already.
Oh, and in related news, SanDisc just announced a 32GB Micro SDHC card ($199est). This card can go into the Desire/Nexus One.

If At&t screws around with the UI I am sure someone will find an easy fix . Most people will have no interest in altering the UI but some of us will want to for many different reasons.

Just when you think a phone is supreme, boom another one drops. I know it is for Sprint, but the HTC EVO 4G is a beast!
I am pretty sure my Windows Mobile days are over and when I can upgrade, I will be getting the best HTC Android that AT&T sells.

I would have the N1 in my hands already but the Desire has FM radio plus optical trackball. That and the Sense UI. If AT&T doesn't mess with the UI too much I'll get it the day it is released. That is IF it is released through ATT.
Exactly like me. The FM tuner, optical trackball and hard buttons are just enough better for me to wait and see if ATT brings the Desire... IF they dont wait to long. I need a new phone so i can wait forever.

Okay, I'm outta here, jumping ship. I've had several dropped calls in the past week, and it's unacceptable. Even if I was to wait around for the Desire to be released, it would be on the same old (OLD) network, with the same old problems, and no hope for future development of a better network...as a 10+ year customer, I'm pretty insulted by the lack of economic competency within this corporation....phone bills screwed up several times, causing me to waste my time calling an understaffed customer service center...I can't count the number of hours I've wasted with this dysfunctional corporation. Have fun everybody, and good luck!

i just dont get all the hush hush about new phones coming to ATT, you would think that ATT would want its consumers to know whats coming... Look at Hollywood, they ADVERTISE months in advance for movies coming out... WHY? to get people interested in spending money. By waiting, they have more of an opportunity to loose out in my opinion. If VZ throughs out the Incredible before ATT offers a similar HTC Android, i might not be here any longer. No, they dont care if i leave, but if everyone wouldnt put up with their crap, they might just change how they do things.

I would love to know why they are being so slow to announce their Android phones. It was nearly 3 months ago, at CES, that they announced the 5 Android phones that would be coming to AT&T, and since then we've had two major wireless industry conventions and we only have two Android phones, one available, one coming soon. After all the rumors about the Desire coming to AT&T, I was hoping for at least some confirmation or denial of that rumor at CTIA, and maybe a timeframe to expect the phone.
There may be some news on at least one front, confirmation of the phone coming to AT&T. Over on Phonedog, they have some pictures of a Desire they got to look at "during a meeting". I didn't really make much of them at first, I've seen quite a few pictures of it, but a commenter noted something interesting. In the first picture, you can clearly see the word "AT&T" on the lock screen.

That's the picture I'm referencing, here's a link to the article: HTC Desire Pics
Obviously this isn't complete confirmation, but I fail to see why the phone would say AT&T on it, if it's not coming to AT&T.

That picture was taken at CTIA in Las Vegas, not Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

I've been due an upgrade for a while. I want an Android. I have a Windows Mobile device and I'm just not happy with it. Phone 7 will probably be a big leap forward, but I don't think it will be be Android. And I refure to wait to Christmas. My wife has an iPhone and is very happy with it. It's nice, but I think an Android would be better for me.
In doing my research I was all set to get a HTC Desire. Then I heard about how AT&T crippled the Backflip. That concerned me a lot. I'm not sure how they'll treat the Aero. Some post on here would have you believe that it's already in bondage. But as far as I know there been no release of information on it, other than it's going to AT&T. Heck at CTIA, when they did the "hands on" Dell didn't even turn it on.
Which brings me to my next topic, at CTIA Samsung introduced the Galaxy S. Sharp phone. Larger "Super" AMOLED display, which is supposed to be better in sunlight than the regular AMOLED display. A lot of post right now are saying the 1 gig cpu in the Galaxy S is even faster than the 1 gig Snapdragon. I really like the Sense UI, but the "Smartlife" UI that Samsung has is pretty nice too. All in all a really nice phone. How do you think it stacks up against the Desire? And since AT&T is dragging their feet on if and when they're getting the Desire, would you go for the Galaxy S if it came to AT&T.
At this point, until I learn more, I may give the Galaxy S the edge just barely. That could change as I learn more. If both phones were to come to AT&T, at about the same time, I think it would come down to which phone AT&T screwed up the least.
I could always jump ship and go for the Evo 4G at Sprint, but they don't have 4G in my area and won't for a while. I do like the simultaneous voice and data with AT&T, but never use it. If I left and got a good phone, I'd probably want to use it all the time.

I'm right there with you Cowboy Crash. I too have been due for an upgrade for about 6 months now. I currently have Windows Mobile, on my FUZE and HATE it now. WAAAAAAAY too laggy for it to do what I need it to do in a decently timely manner. I mean, itis tweaked and I'm running WM 6.5.3 with Sense 2.1, but it's slowed down A LOT for some reason.
I thought about the Dell Aero but after hearing from various websites (BoyGenius and AndroidCentral) it too will be "crippled" like the Backflip. The Galaxy S looks AMAZING and I'm VERY interested in it. For me, it's really just which ever phone shows up first really. The Sony Xperia X10 looks great as well, but if it's only running Android 1.6, well what's the point when the Desire will have 2.1 with HTC Sense.
On a brighter note, I went to the AT&T store today and asked about the Dell Aero as well as HTC Desire. I was told that the Aero just says coming soon, but the gentleman I talked to said the Desire shows to be releasing March 29, but they don't have anything in stock. I find this hard to believe, maybe he meant April 29? Can anyone else confirm this?

AT&T typically releases phones on Sundays, and the only 29th that's a sunday in the near future is august, I DOUBT it is august. MAY 29 is on a Saturday, which is closer to the rumored release date (and much more likely to mistake MARCH for MAY). I was told by my AT&T rep May, but they are shooting for an early release.
I am still under contract, but eligible for an upgrade. I REALLY want the Desire, but do not want it if it's locked down. If they do in fact lock it down, I'm considering switching to T-mo, getting the nexus, and rooting it, replacing the ROM with the Desire ROM. I won't really make any decisions until I know more about the Desire. I had them check my account yesterday and they said as it stands now, early termination for me is $80, going down $5 a month.... so if I have to pay $70 to get out of contract 3 months early I will. I would rather stay on AT&T though because they have a better network.I guess I just have to wait and see... been waiting since I became eligible for an upgrade in November!
