I just received my Bravo last night. As I was working with it, an update message appeared. I accepted the update, but don't know what it was for. Now, I do not have my home screen any longer. And the menu options on the bottom of the phone do nothing. I do have a status bar at the top, but that is it, the rest of the screen is black. Has anyone had this issue and is there a way to fix it?
Thanks

Try to locate where the Factory reset option is and select that.

Good morning. We have Motorola Bravo phones running Android.
An automatic update request kept popping up on our phones yesterday. I kept putting it off on my phone but my husband finally told his to update. The system put the update off until overnight. My husband hit "install update" and got a box unpacking. Then he had a lightning logo on the far left side of the drop-down screen and he dismissed it. His screen now has nothing on it except the status bar at the top which shows the time, bars, 3G, upload/download arrows, etc. The rest of the screen is black -- nothing there. No app icons, no widgets, nothing. It looks like all his apps -- even the ones that came preloaded -- are completely gone.
Turned the phone off and then back on again. He got the SIM locked screen and entered the password, which worked just fine. The next screen should be the password protect for the phone, but it didn't pop up at all.
We have called the phone and it receives calls, which can be answered. I have texted the phone from my computer and it receives texts. But he cannot call out because there is nowhere to pull up a dialer and he cannot text out (unless replying to a received text) because he cannot pull up the text message option anywhere.
There is no response by the phone when touching any of the 3 Android hot keys.
I have read the comments above and have found them to be unhelpful.
I have found two ways to hard reset the phone. The first:
- From the main home screen, tap menu
- Tap Settings, then Privacy
- Tap Factory data reset
- Tap Reset phone
- Enter your password if required, then tap Erase everything to confirm
Can't do that because I don't have anything on my home screen - no icons, nothing.
The second:
If that doesn't work, or if your phone is frozen:
- Turn the power off. If your Motorola BRAVO is frozen, pull the battery out and reinsert it
- Press and hold the Power and Camera buttons
- Release the Camera button when prompted
- Press and hold the Volume Down key
- A yellow exclamation will appear on the display
- Select the Wipe data/factory reset (Alt + W) option
There is no external camera button on a Motorola Bravo. And since there is no response from the hot keys and no app icons on the screen, I cannot access the on-screen camera button.
Thanks so much for any suggestions you may have.

I am having the same problem as above (no home screen) after I updated to the new version yesterday. I have followed the instructions, and have restarted while holding down the 'power' and 'volume down' buttons. I get the screen with the triangle and android, but pressing the volume down button doesn't bring up a list of any kind. Anyone else having this problem, and have you resolved it? I've been searching for other options all morning, and I think I will have to wait until tomorrow and call Motorola.
Really think it is poor planning to send out an update on Friday afternoon, when there will be no support available over the weekend.

This was great help!
Thanks so much! I used the first link and did a hard reset. The only thing I had to do differently is in red, below:
Steps to Fix Issue (Froyo)
- Remove and remount the battery. Turn on your phone by pressing the Power key and Volume Down button at the same time
- Screen will come up with "triangle ! / Android", press Vol down key to cycle through choices until you get "Android system recovery", then press Vol up key
- Tap on bottom right corner of the screen (may take a few times). a menu will come up Tapping did not work, but pushing the power key did.
- Tap on "wipe data/factory reset", and tap OK. Could not tap okay but pushing the power key worked. Another Confirmation screen will come. Tap Yes and OK Could not tap okay but pushing the power key worked.
- After userdata is cleared, the "reboot system now" option will be highlighted by Default. Tap OK Could not tap okay but pushing the power key worked.
- Phone will reboot to initial setup MOTOBLUR screen.

After 30 minutes of working on a Bravo, one more helpful hint to anyone who finds this thread. If tapping on the lower right corner of the screen does not work and pushing the power button does not work (to get the recovery menu) press the volume up and down at the same time. This worked for the phone I was working on and got into recovery mode.

I also have gotten the notice to update the software on my Bravo. Before I do the update, have been trying to find out what I will have to recover after the update is complete. The instructions state that my data will not be deleted but what about apps installed from the Market, icons, widgets, options selected, etc. I tried the ATT help center and they were clueless as to what would be wiped out.
Can anyone who has done the upgrade successfully help me with this?
Thanks in advance.

I upgraded my daughters Bravo and all contacts and apps where still there afterwards. All her settings, incuding widgets, remained intact. Her pics are stored on the sd card and obviously you lose nothing from the sd card. If you have a pin or slide pattern to open the home screen, other than the regular slide to open, I recommend disabling for the upgrade. I have read a couple of posts where this interfered.

Glad to help. I upgraded my daughters Bravo without issue and have found it to be much snappier now. Previously, she was having some lag.

I have had nothing but problems with my once well functioning phone since installing this update. The home key no longer works—I have to back out of each menu level by level, the touch screen has lost sensitivity and often is unresponsive, the phone freezes up, I cannot text images, I often do not get a notification when I have received a text, the word recognition function when texting doesn't recognize words very well anymore... the list goes on. I have rebooted the phone by turning it off and taking the battery out 6 times yesterday and 3 times today. It did not help at all. I will never install an update on this phone again! Developers need to make sure these updates actually make the device BETTER before sending them out. This one is HORRIBLE. They ruined a perfectly good phone.

I ran the upgrade on my Bravo last night and everything seems to be working. There were one or two notification or ringtone settings I had to reset. I haven't identified any other problems.

I ended up having to do a factory reset & everything works great now. Of course you have to reinstall all of your apps, but I don't mind. As for the home button. You need to go to the Android Market & download Moto Home Fix & your home button will work properly again. Hope this helps.

I am with DLM on this one. i installed the update, i had to do a factory reset where i lost all my apps and settings, and my phone STILL sucks. i loved this phone before the update, and now i hate it. it does nothing but freeze up, not respond to my touch, pull up things i didn't click on, etc. it's infuriating. and of course i only got this phone in february so ATT won't do anything for me. i'm very irritated.

i too did the upgrade and now my corporate email won't show voicemail (.wav) files on my phone. when i open an email of the voicemail, the screen is white without text. so far, i have been able to forward them, and then i can download the message left at the office. when i do that it works as it should and as it did before. before the upgrade i could open the email and click on the .wav file and play it. anyone one have a fix for this? i have searched without any hope of a solution this far.

I know I am behind the game here, but it finally dawned on my that since after doing the update on my phone, I have had nothing but problems as well. I have done 3 factory resets on one phone, even sent one of the phones back and got another. The new one just started out acting slow and lethargic. Does anyone have any info on this update, what it was for etc. I noticed certain times of the day it acts slower, like it's not aligned with the satalite or something (major sarcasm there). Some times it takes me, literally, 5 minutes just to make a call or 10 minutes to send a text. It's ridiculous and AT&T's customer service act like they have no clue. I'm sure they have been bombarded with calls from people regarding this since the update....you think?

My phone sucks no that i have the update. I have done 3 factory resets and nothing helps. I even turned one phone in for another crappy phone. Does anyone know what this update was for? Besides slowing down my phone so bad it takes me 5 minutes just to make a call at times.

THIS WAS THE KEY.... if you can't get the menu from the Android Yellow Exclamation Key - press volume up & down at same time.

when I get to recovery mode what will this allow me to do? My Bravo doesnt respond to the screen when trying to make calls use apps or go online. have to use voice all the time. This started after an update. I have done half a dozen factory resets hoping to revert to the previous update. No luck though.

Have you gotten your issue resolved at all?
Well, I basically came to the forums here because I didn't know where else to go to report this, but I opened up 4 lines and 2 of them were Bravo's back in June of last year. By now, my users are sick of them slowing down and freezing on them all the time.
They are not really savvy users, but I am and I've looked at both of them repeatedly and tell them how to use it and check their mem usage frequently to close apps and restart at least once a day and same issue persists right away. The phone eventually will freeze up and become as useless as a paperweight.
This appears to be a problem with the hardware (processory, memory specs) which is unable to apparently handle the "load" of the android operating system (not to mention the "bloatware" which AT&T adds which might be using up system resources).
This needs to be addressed, acknowledged, and there must be someone held accountable for this because when you buy a PHONE and it cannot even work to make CALLS, pretty much, that to me is considered being HAD and we bought useless pieces of equipment that we are now stuck with.
[Per Guidelines: Keep it Relevant and Appropriate].Maybe AT&T is not responsible, maybe Motorola for not doing enough testing.
So who's in?
