Hi, I have not been able to update my Samsung Captivate. Kies Mini does not detect my phone. I've contacted ATT and they could offer no solutions/suggestions other than contact Samsung directly.
HELP!!!!

Have you checked your USB cable? I have found on several occasions that my USB cable was bad. The Captivate's USB plug seems to be hard on the microusb contacts.

Does the phone acknowledge that the USB plug has been connected by asking what USB mode to enter? If not you may want to check in Settings>Applications>USB settings and make sure that "Ask on Connection" or "Kies (Firmware update) is selected.

Hi, thanks for responding. As it turns out, the USB cord that came with the phone is now out of commission. When I plug in with the USB setting at "Ask on connection" it does that. I am able to select "Kies Mini Firmware Update". It starts to initialize then stops. I've already spoken to Samsung via Chat, the rep was not able to help me resolve my issue. The correct USB Modem software downloaded but it will not install. Says there is a problem with USB Mobile Composite.

I was told by AT&T tech support that the reason the tethering message appears is because the update was not fully accepted by the phone. Essentially, the phone is "screwed up" in their own words and cannot be fixed unless they come out with a patch or fix for the problem. There is no way to go back and uninstall the update and their is no way to fix the issue.Despite acknowledging the problem is casued by the upgrade not working, AT&T will do nothing to replace your phone.

Two options:
1) Try doing a wipe/factory reset
2) If that doesn't work, reflash the update using Odin.

To be honest ... Put a custom ICS 4.0.3 Android ROM on your Galaxy S.
It was kind of scary the first time because I was afraid of bricking it or having a malfunctioning phone, but it's not that hard. The real beauty of it the custom ROM is that it runs SOOOOOO much better thant the stock 2.1 or 2.2 crap that AT&T or Samsing gives you. I can't say anything about 2.3 because I got tired of waiting for AT&T to get off their &@$ and so installed 4.0.3 on my phone BEFORE AT&T even released 2.3 to their PAYING customers ...

Since I "upgraded" to 2.3.5, it seems I've lost the ability to connect to the internet & no longer have "3G" indication. About half of my exiting apps no longer work & the phone is picky about which new apps it will allow to download. Any suggestions?
