To reiterate, my UCKH1 Infuse was one of the "unregistered device" handsets and I became impatient and used GTG's_Ultimate_Unbrick which I linked in my last post. After using that utility as instructed to install UCKD5 firmware on my phone, I was able to use Kies Mini to update the phone immediately (first try) to 2.3.6 Gingerbread. This was using Windows 7 64-bit, so as others have said the OS is a non-issue.

Does that utility completely take your phone back to stock, or just the firmware?

Will using the GTG program delete all date on the phone? The only data i really care about on my phone are my photos, since I assume my contacts are all saved on my google account, but I have backed up my photos.
Are there any other risks to using the GTG Program that you know of? Because I am tempted to use it, as I am still having the "unregistered device" error, and I dont know that samsung will be able to remedy that in a timely manner.
Your post was most helpful.

For all of the other Infuse 4G owners out there that were as frustrated as I was with Kies Mini giving you that dreaded "unregistered device" message, I have to say that GTG's method does indeed work. All it does is downgrade your phone to the previous version of Froyo; SGH-I997UCKD5. If you're running Froyo UCKH1, then you will get that annoying "unregistered device" message. Be sure to backup anything on your phone that you want to keep as you will probably need to reset the phone back to factory settings. I removed my micro SD card just be safe. I performed this on my Windows 7 64-bit machine and it worked flawlessly, so Kies Mini does indeed work with 64-bit versions.
Hopefully, Samsung will fix the issues with their Kies Mini software so that their customers won't have to go through this mess again. It shouldn't matter what version or revision of Android that is on the phone; it should just work like everything else. Big thanks goes to GTG. What a time saver!

Used the "GTG's Ultimate Unbrick" to return phone to stock and I am currently upgrading my phone to Gingerbread via Kies Mini. What a pain, but happy!

So everyone one is saying if you have UCKD5 or UCKH1 , but what if you have UCKE3? And I am having problems. So what do people with UCKE3 do?

So If I i have to do the GTG thing, is there any way to save or back up a whole text message conversation, and the notes I have saved in the "memo" pad? I have alot of things saved in the "memo".

I also have UCKE3, my phone's software update says I'm up to date, and Samsung support has been no help at all, as well as AT&T. So, now what?!

A few things need to be clarified here. First off if your running any other version of the software like UCKE3 (the version that had the over the air update), you will get the unregistered message in Samsung Kies. Using Samsung Kies has nothing to do with 32 or 64 bit operating systems. I have a 64 bit version of vista and use it. I rolled back to UCKD5 using steps on xda and it worked perfectly. That being said...
Att doesnt make the software, its not something they support, its supported by Samsung. So if you want to be angry at someone for it not being compatible with all software versions right this second be mad at Samsung. Att provides the signal to the phone, thats it. Do you call your cable company if you screw up your TV? {keep it courteous} If you wanted Gingerbread bad enough theres a zillion threads all over the internet on how to do it. So unless your willing to be brave and involve yourself with the hobby such as rooting, sit back and be patient so Samsung can spoon feed you. Samsung probably could have made things easier by not involving Kies as well, this implies some sort of basic computer skills of the end user to the perform the update which clearly alot of you dont have...at all.

If you wanted Gingerbread bad enough theres a zillion threads all over the internet on how to do it. Are you what, a <keep it courteous>! Really surprised after reading your comment and looking at your knowledge about rooting and then taking side of att. Don't you even know that at&t modifies all android phone software, adds its bloatware to promote its lousy apps and media!! It's finally at&t's call and updates, which makes it to your phone. Samsung might have had the updates ready long time back, but at&t makes sure that the update doesn't break anything and phone/data still work fine and actually gives user benefits over the current version.
I'm not saying that Samsung has done a great job, but at the end of the day, we bought phone from at&t and not from Samsung.
Noone here is shouting because it took almost a year to get the update, but the bizzarre situation at&t has created in last 48 hours, is a shame for the so called one of the biggest wireless company of US.
We din't ask them to announce publically that infuse gets GB upadate. If this situation was for galaxy S2, I'm pretty sure they would have solved it in matter of hours. But, they know that very "few" users are out there who own Infuse, they are just ignoring the questions and problems and delaying the process.
Do a little research before you post anything.

So Samsung Kies is made by ATT now, wow didn't know that? Since your saying ATT caused it all.
Really it is Samsung because the same thing happens with other carriers updates as well and even other platforms entirely. Try to load Mango on any windows mobile phone that didn't have it originally, its a fiasco that has nothing to do with the specific carrier because it sucks for everyone no matter who you have.
Its the same thing with itunes, that has zero to do with the carrier and everything to do with the Manf. and the end user, yet people flock in droves to the carrier phone stores and over the phone instead of calling who might actually be able to help them, which is Apple everytime a new software update comes out for the iphone and it bricks the phone.
Let me also clarify since you are commenting on something you clearly know very little about, you can switch versions of the software on the phone without rooting it. The tool that is used is called Odin, you can put on UCKD5 (original) or UCKE3 (over the air update modified version). You hook up the USB cable follow about 5 simple instructions and it takes about 5 min and its done. You don't have to be a hacker, all it takes is some simple reading (which is very hard for most people), if you in that much of a hurry to do this software update which to be quite honest makes little difference if any at all.
If you don't like your carrier, fine, switch to another one, but stop barking up the wrong trees to people that have no idea what your talking about because it's not software they made, sell (by sell I mean Samsung Kies), or support. A software update has nothing to do with your service, its optional, you don't have to do it.

You are comparing apples and oranges. Apple has complete control over their iPhones. There is no bloatware added, nothing. AT&T nor any other manufaturer for that matter, has nothing to do with the iPhone OS. Android, on the other hand, has been modified by AT&T and releases are controlled by AT&T. So AT&T absolutely has a part in this debacle.
If I get a satellite receiver from DirecTV, but made by Motorola, and the receiver malfunctions, I call DirecTV. Not Motorola. Becuase Motorola doesn't get the final word on when software is released, DirecTV does. As is the case here with AT&T.
I agree, Samsung should do a better job on Quality Control for releasing software and they are the ones on the hook for getting Kies working. But AT&T is certainly not innocent.

What I'm wondering is why this AT&T rep jamileh is hardly telling us anything come on jamileh give us some update instead of the run around after all it's us the customers that are paying you way to much every month not to have answers or the software update that I might add you announced months ago and failed to release until now and when you did only a small number of us are able to do the update everyone else like myslef gets the unregistered device error. So come on speak up tell us something!!!!!

Lets think that this was not carriers problem that we got our update late or we are having problem installing update, but its samsung problem...
But can anyone explain me why Rogers in Canada got Gingerbread way way ahead of att customers?? Its the same manufacturer and same phone... right... How come Samsung dint face problem there but facing here?? so, even anyone would like to tell that its samsung problem??
The key point is, ATT holds the key when to update, poor samsung already had it software ready which was installed on Rogers Canada phones may be 6 to 8 monts ago... the other minor modifications for att took a lifetime to come, when they come they failed to get installed on phones.... whose problem is it now??

Rogers phones were shipped with the update and it really comes down to AT&T I know people who work there and AT&T is so demanding on what stuff they want in the software IE all the AT&T apps none of which I never use or need being forced in the software I mean why not just put them in the market and those who want them have a choice to download them. So truth is Samsung has had the update ready since late summer and AT&T has not let me send it out and the second reason is AT&T wants you to upgrade/buy a new phone every year so by holding off on the update a lot of customers just opt to go ahead and buy another phone hence making AT&T more money. And had far as waiting honestly haven't we already waited long enough and now its here and we can't have it becuase the fall update which was AT&T screwed it up for the new software????

Just curious enjeru407 how much do you pay AT&T every month I pay them well over 200.00 a month for cutting edge tech and I'm getting dino tech when other android phones get updates within a month or two after there release prehaps there is a reason the FCC blocked AT&T from buying Tmobile cause it seems AT&T can't get it together and they are greedy. Lets face it AT&T has a direct line to samsung and they nice lady who started this thread no one has heard anything from her since yesterday afternoon. Most of us just want an offical statement on whats going on not this guessing game they keep playing with us. But seriously how would you feel if your power company only powered half your house cause thats what AT&T is doing to out phones look at the link AT&T posted to the samsung site with the instructions on how to do the install in more than one place it says captivate with the captivates model number (read it closely) I mean come on this is the Infuse I997 does it not strike you as odd that they didn't even change the name?
