Yes I tried pressing the button to go into kies mode when prompted after plugging in my phone as well as setting it to automatically go into kies mode when plugged in. You can't set the usb mode when in debugging mode but I did try it in debugging mode.
To the people that have had success: what is on the screen of your phone when kies mini was downloading the binary files? Mine had the connecting to kies mini with the little usb plug image on it. Then after the download when I received the SGH-I997 could not be upgraded message, my phone switched to the downloading yellow android caution sign and my computer was asking to search for drivers to install a new device. Yet the drivers are already installed with kies mini. Am I missing something here?

That may be your problem, about the drivers already being installed on Kies mini. Samsung's website says that when your phone goes into download mode, there needs to be more drivers installed (specifically, two of them). Regardless, even if that happened for me, the upgrade still failed on me for a mysterious reason. The entire upgrade instructions on the website apparently assume that you're connecting your phone to the computer for the very first time.
I have six suspecting causes of the upgrade failing:
1. My previous phone's drivers were never uninstalled from the computer; they were installed but the phone was never able to be connected to my computer since the phone could not even turn on past the Samsung logo. (Proposed solution: Back up all documents and other files on computer and then do a clean install of Windows or borrow someone else's computer to do the upgrade.)
2. If the two drivers never installed, then you might have a driver conflict. (Solution: Connect your phone in USB debugging mode with Kies mode enabled, open Device Manager and uninstall anything that contains "Samsung" or "SGH" for a name. Then remove Kies mini, download a fresh copy from Samsung's website, and reinstall it, connecting your phone with only Kies mode turned on, NOT along with USB debugging.)
3. Certain apps on my phone that conflicted with the upgrade process. (In progress because I didn't try the upgrade yet: Do a factory data reset and don't install any apps or put any files on the phone, including music and captured video, until after you try the upgrade and finishes successfully.)
4. My phone's internal storage (not external SD card) was nearly full. (Solution: Same as #2.)
5. External SD card is full. (Solution: Remove it before even connecting your phone to the computer.)
6. My damaged and bent USB connector. (Solved: Get a new data cable from an AT&T store.)
If any of these apply to you, please try taking these suggested solutions. It's worth a try. However, please bear in mind that these are SUGGESTIONS, so something could go wrong even after taking the appropriate actions. For those of you who didn't get the upgrade successfully and are trying to find a solution, I am not responsible for anyone's phones getting bricked after trying out these solutions.
I noticed that on Samsung's website, the default instructions do not mention that USB debugging needs to be turned on. Instead it just shows the three options when connecting to the computer (no such options are available when USB debuggin is on). Only in the basic troubleshooting checklist does it mention that, in the event Kies mini doesn't see the phone.
It's kind of unusual that Samsung expects you to have never ever connected your phone to your computer until the Gingerbread update. What if you needed to transfer lots of files from your computer to the phone, or if you were dying to check for that update on Kies mini (which, in this case, is completely understandable because they took so long to get it out and we never knew exactly when it would be released)?

I did at one time have kies installed instead of kies mini. I have un-installed the prog and installed kies mini. I am wondering if it is not fully un-installed. I read somewere that samsung provided an un-installer but I have failed to find it.
I did try in-stalling kies mini and the drivers provided on the at&t support page which are the onley two drivers I know about but that didn't work either.
If anyone knows a link to the afore mentioned kies un-installer please post.

An incomplete uninstall of a program could also be a problem much as an incomplete driver uninstall. But really, there is no reason for an upgrade to fail. What kind of smartphone doesn't upgrade successfully when an update specifically for the phone was released? Every smartphone should be able to be upgraded when something for the phone is released. Otherwise, part of the meaning of "smartphone" is lost.
All of you who upgraded successfully, could you please do us a favor and give us some insight on what exactly happened that caused your updates to be successful?

Which drivers are you referring to? The drivers when you first connect the phone to Kies mode or the drivers that are installed when the phone is in download mode?

Quite an unusual case. What else happened? Did you have USB debugging turned on? After GB downloaded, when Kies mini started the upgrade, how many drivers installed when your phone went into download mode? If you remember, what were they? What happened as those drivers installed and after they installed?

No drivers installed during upgrade? Did you put your phone into download mode BEFORE you connected to the computer?

My phone worked perfectly on Froyo, right now I'm fighting for it to work normally. I read here somewhere that they improved power management. Well, what can I say, they definitely did something, but not for me. My phone could stay up to 3 days with Froyo, right now it barely holds 24 hors with minor usage, I'm shocked.
Does anyone have the same issue with the battery drain?

Look for an app called SNS stopping and restarting if you are experiencing crappy battery life - if you see it, that's likely the culprit (I root and remove it using TIBU as it does nothing but cause issues for me , no matter froyo or GB).

SuperOneClick won't work on 2.3.6 (maybe 2.3.5) or newer.
The easiest way is to flash a custom kernel with Clockworkmod Recovery in Odin, then flash either Chainfire's SuperSU or ChainsDD's Superuser CWM packages.

I have about given up on at&t and their total lack of interest in our plight.
Might as well hack this thing with Zeus since they don't care anyway.

I read that gingerbread adds support for apps using front camera for video chatting... my new SGSII has video chat available in Google Talk when both sides are on wi-fi... but my Infuse with gingerbread does not have the option. So did I misunderstand or miss something? ![]()

Its weird, I'm on twitter and instagram for a while and I only lose 1% battery, but I send a couple texts and I lose like 3 or 4 battery. Im not liking it. With froyo I got 3 days regularly, 2 with heavy usage. I'm gonna try training my battery again and see if that helps
Speaking of batteries...
jim_pie, did you have a full battery before you started the upgrade? I just remembered that when I tried the upgrade, my battery percentage was in its 80s. The instructions clearly stated that a fully charged battery is one of the things we need to do the upgrade, or else it wouldn't complete.
Solution: Fully charge battery.

Keep in mind that will void your warranty. I found that a warranty is very important if your phone fails on you for no reason; an AT&T DSC can fix or replace your phone for free, although I do have a gripe that we should also be given an option to get a different phone under this warranty.
Please, there's no reason why Kies mini should not work. Try it again with a full battery on your phone. I know I will try it again when I get the chance to. Unfortunately, I have to wait until next week to do that because I simply don't have time this week. I will still be open for more success stories and other possible causes for upgrade failures until that time.

I am having the same problem with battery drain. My battery was completely full when I upgraded. I barely use my phone, have blue tooth, wifi and gps turned off ani the only thing running is weatherbug. My battery drains in less than a day. I wanted the upgrade for the better battery and got just the opposite. This is terrible! I've had good luck with Samsung phones before, but I'll think twice before getting another one after this. ![]()

It seems less laggy after a couple days of usage, but still, the battery is my main concern. I have "everything" turned off, so I expect it to last at least as it did on Froyo.
I even shut down SNS service and Hotmail sync, will see.
Honestly, there is nothing special in this update. I still have pretty much the same phone, but right now I'm fighting for its normal operation and messed up all my programs with the hard reset (did this after the update, since my phone was almost unusable).
