If that were the case you would think a company would publicize the release times for groups of IMEI numbers so that people would know when to expect to be able to update instead. Right now it is a guessing game at best.

Yup, the Rogers Infuse came with Gingerbread at the end of July. It has not been updated since then, even though the Rogers release has some flaws:
No HDMI support
Very slow download speeds due to small TCP buffer settings
Poor video recording performance
People on XDA have had UCKL2 since early December. Unfortunately, those who are into running custom kernels are still out of luck - At this point Samsung is violating the GPL license of the Linux kernel by not posting kernel source code for this release. (The SGH-I997R source tree is NOT the one used to build AT&T kernels - kernels made using the I997R source code drop don't support HDMI, and also don't support video acceleration with newer AT&T system firmware builds.)

If you never did the OTA update from UCKD5 to UCKH1 in November 2011, Kies Mini will allow you to do the upgrade. If you're running UCKH1, Kies Mini will show "Unregistered device" for now.
There are ways to revert the phone to UCKD5. If you must have the upgrade right now, that's the surest way to get it: revert to UCKD5 and then Kies Mini will install the upgrade.

I have the updated version and I was able to use keis mini to update to gingerbread today. I got the kies download from samsung.com, support, type in samsung infuse 4 g smartphone, then go to downloads (kies mini and others) download that to your desktop. Then open kies, plug your phone in via usb, select kies (firmware update) on your phone. (settings, applications, usb settings if the option does not pop up). Then click on phone upgrade button in Kies mini. Took about 5 minutes and it seems to be working great. My phone has NOT been rooted.

A few people running UCKH1 are able to update. Most aren't. The reason most aren't is currently unknown. There is speculation that Samsung is doing a controlled rollout, possibly based on IMEI.

OK, I give up, surrender, white flag is being waved...
I am running the UCKH1, have followed all of the steps (with the exception of a factory reset, won't do it), so I guess those of us running this version get to set and wait. Not being told when we will be able to update, just having to continually try until we are blessed with it.
This just goes back to a half A$$ way of providing "excellent customer service". You should be able to easily identify when you will be able to update. Again, I point to apple (as I have in other posts)...when the new OS rolls out, it is available to all and if it is not (older iPhone versions) they let you know up front.
I have a hard time understanding why the Android OS is not like the Apple OS. All Android phones running the same OS, getting OS updates at the same time. You would think that it would help provide some continuity with customer service.

I updated to gingerbread and I can't turn on my data. It used to have an option to deactivate/activate data when you pushed the power button and that is gone!! UGH

Too bad the data option is removed. It was so easy! I called Samsung and they said to go to market and search for a toggle to control the data activation. I found one for free and I will see if it works. Other than this the upgrade seems cool! My phone is faster for sure!

Ok I am getting a weird error. I downloaded Kies Mini from the Infuse dowloads page and installed. When I started Kies up it tried to download an update and stopped repeatedly at 64% and told me I have been disconnected from the internet. I know I didn't lose connectivity at 64% download 6 times by coincidence. Anyways, I canceled the update and when I plug my phone in the drivers are installed and ready but the Kies software never recognizes that my phone has been plugged in. Is this just part of the wonderful world of SAMSUNG/ATT updates or do I have a different issue?

Just got off the phone with Samsung and it has been verified that they are rolling out the update in phases. There is some unknown criteria on when each person will get the update, but it should be fully deployed in about 7 days.

You use GtG Ultimate Unbrick.

Sorry but the UCKD5 is the update that was provided on Kies the UCKH1 is the OTA version of the update i know this cus i had a friend that briked his infuse and had to unbrick it using the info on XDA and for the fun of it he hooked it up to Kies ans did the update then he re installed stock again and did the OTA update so he could see the differance. So I would check your info again.
I'm well aware of that. UCKH1, the November OTA update, is the one that has everyone waiting because Kies Mini shows the phone as "unregistered device". UCKD5 (which was also available as an OTA update in October) will allow Kies Mini to upgrade the phone to UCKL2 immediately.
Check YOUR info, sir.

Wrong.
GtG Ultimate Unbrick comes with UCKD5. The Phone filename is, in fact, PHONE_UCKD5.tar.md5. The PDA file name is PDA_UCKD5.tar.md5. The version shown in "about phone" under settings after running GtG Ultimate Unbrick is UCKD5.

Has anyone who has upgraded noticed any problems? My screen now seems somewhat slow/unresponsive to touch. Like its not registering my touch or uncalibrated? I don't know just doens't seem as smooth as it was on Froyo. Ugh.

Again, an oppurtunity for ATT to be proactive and explain the process to its customer base...instead we get to run around looking for answers ourselves.
I wish that I could run a business with this model and reap the income that they are able...

My keyboard seems unresponsive as well. And I am mad that the enable data option is gone when you hit the power button.

Hey all - I reached out to Samsung regarding the "unregistered device" some of you have reported seeing. Here are the steps they provided for troubleshooting:
If you’re receiving an “unregistered device” message when you try to update, try these troubleshooting steps:
You may have changed your default USB settings. To check your USB settings follow the instructions below:
- Close the Kies mini application.
- On you device press Menu , then touch Settings > Applications > USB settings.
- Touch Kies (Firmware update).
- Reopen the Kies mini application.
- Reconnect your device to the PC.
Things to keep in mind:
- If your device is rooted, the update may not work
- Verify device has proper production software
- Make sure is a production device
- Check for IMEI corruption (verify sticker on phone matches what is list in the phone menu)
- As a last resort, you can reset the device but beware that this will remove any stored data

Thanks for finally responding to the thread, but none of that resolves the "Unregistered device" issue.

I can second that, I have taken all of those steps (save the factory reset) and it does not resolve the issue...

So the summary of all my hunting and pecking in many fora are as follows:
1. Registering on the Samsung site is irrelevant to the update process via Kies Mini, as many have updated without any registration.
2. Those with the Nov OTA update to UCKH1 are almost all getting "Unregistered device". (One or two claim to have upgraded despite this.)
3. Those who haven't taken the Nov OTA upgrade or have deliberately downgraded to UCKD5 find the upgrade to GB via Kies Mini to be immediate.
4. There is some support for the idea that the servers are using IMEIs to manage server load.
5. There is some support for the idea that UCKH1 will be upgraded last but within the next 1-2 weeks.
