Skyrocket screen keeps going to black during phone calls [ Edited ]

Hi, I just got my re-furb Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket a few days ago.... I love the phone but the screen keeps going to black after 15 seconds or so. Even during phone calls which is annoying because then I can't use the touch screen to end a call unless I manually turn the screenlight back on.

I went into settings/ display and chose "10 minutes" for the screen timeout.

Then I went to power saving mode and selected "power saving on at 30% battery power."

My battery is fully charged but this is happening constantly.

So my question is -- am I doing something wrong? Or is there something wrong with the phone? Is this normal?

It's normal to have the phone turn off as it senses you are talking and you can't see the screen anyway. You can use the power button to end the call if you go into call settings and check the Power Button Ends Call option.

How many people found the Power Button Ends Call checkbox? This is a real handy solution for most people except if you talk and surf at the same time and the screen goes blank. This option is buried in the settings so that you may find it hard to locate. So here it is:

MENU > SETTINGS > ACCESSIBILITY > POWER BUTTON ENDS CALL

ilikewireless is correct. Nothing is wrong with your phone; the proximity sensors on the phone near the earpiece is what causes the screen to black out when you are placing or answering a phone call. Not only does this help save your battery life, but it also prevents your cheek/ear/etc. from accidentally touching the phone, resulting in something that you might not have wanted (i.e. hanging up on the person you are talking with).

Hi everyone... thank you for explaining that to me. I did find the settings to fix it so that I can power off to end a phone call, etc. I was mainly annoyed by the screen going black in the middle of phone calls. This is my first android phone and I am not used to the battery issues. I've always had my phones lit up constantly and didn't have to worry about draining the battery.

I LOVE the Skyrocket, I am seriously in love with this phone, but I am definitely not used to the short battery life. I like to play with my phone and I'm finding it runs out of juice fairly quickly. I'm probably going to have to shell out extra money for an extra battery as well as a car charger. But it will be money well spent because this phone is sooooo cool!

It sounds like the proximity sensor turns off the OP's screen during a call, and then it stays off (even if they take the phone away from their ear)?  Is this how Samsung smartphones work by design?  I've only ever owned HTC, and their phones always turn the screen back on (during a call) when you take the phone away from your ear.  So the screen is automatically on so you end the call, use keypad, etc.  Same thing on my wife's iPhone.

The prox. sensor works most of the time on my Captivate, but sometimes I have to press the power button to have the screen light up when I want it to, i.e. entering numbers on the keypad.

Works most of the time for me too. Sometimes I have to bring up the END CALL button at the end of a call because the End Call button disappeared. That's why I "program" the power off button to end a call. Very handy.

Hi! I have Z990G but I have the same problem, when I try to call someone or any company that I have to choose any option it won't work. Even for my voice mail I can't put my password, because there is not way to turn on the screen, even though I press every single bottom. I have my phone to show END bottom but nothing. I called the company and they reset my phone 3 times already and they don't know how to fix it.. Any idea for my phone?
