My daughter picked up the Solstice II last week, and this phone has this tendancy to shut itself down...out of the blue, no warning, full battery. Could be in the middle of typing a message, or just when it's idle.
Any idea what's going on?
Thanks.

BTW - it tends to happen every day around the same time...around 7'sh PM.
Also, it always happen when she is holding the phone. Most shut downs are not full shut downs...when she press the ON button it does NOT go through the full "boot" cycle.

If your daughter's new Solstice II is already having random shutdowns, I would suggest to return the phone for an exchange. Chances are that the issue will get progressively worse over time. Upon the return of the phone, be sure to have her include all of the original packaging the phone came in as well as the components. She will also be subject to pay a $35 restocking fee for the returned phone. The exchange she would get instead would be free.

Well, we will do that, and I am not going to pay $35 restocking fee. Why should I be fined it the phone is broken?! As far as I understand, the restocking fee applies only if I return the phone altogether within the 30 days without getting another one or replacement.
But the big question is - is this 'auto shut off' thing common in the Solstice II?

I have seen and heard about this a couple of times with the Solstice II. I would guesstimate about two or three times. My sister has the original Solstice - it has never had the shutdown problem and is one TOUGH phone! I had these problems with my Mythic - I had to replace it with a Captivate. The Captivate is also known to have the shutdown problem if it was not manufactured past November of 2010.
So, you are not alone. Once in a while, (particularly Samsung) cell phones tend to shut themselves down and then back on, etc. As long as the phone is treated with care, you should be fine.

I also have a Samsung Solstice 2, which I have had since December of last year, and I have not experienced the random shut downs like what you say your daughter's phone is doing. As far as this being a common issue with the phone, I would say no. My phone has worked fine since I pulled it out of the box brand new.

OK, so we changed my (oldest) daughter's phone within the 30 days with another, new, Solstice II. It is not as severe as the first one, but it still shuts itself down. Yesterday, while she was tping a text message, the screen went black, phone shuts down (or to better describe it - goes into smoe kind of a sleep or hybernate mode). She presses the on/off button, the 3G flash thing that goes accross the screen at start up comes up and it goes straight to the saved message that she was typing. This is insane.
Now, yesterday we upgraded my other daughter's phone to the Solstice II as well. Guess what - it shut itself off tonight, then came back on by itself.
What the heck? How could this be?

I just got a solstice 2 and the speaker phone and ringer quit working. I got a refurbished unit under warranty and now this one won't charge. I don't know what to say about your phone shutting down, but this is definitely an unreliable phone.

i got the solstice 2 about 4 days ago and so far couple of issues. one shutdown as described by the OP and couple of frozen points while texting where i had to shut it down manualy. also once after start up contacts where gone and it took about 10 secs to show them up again.
according to a costco's att kiosk representative, costco stopped offering the solstice 2 due to alot of returns, yet there are many good reviews about it online.
i still have 26 left before my 30 return period expire, i will give it a try for the next week or so and if the issues continue then its going back. you gotta think about that this HAS to be your phone for the next 2 years! ![]()

Well, not necessarilly 2 years. If you go to an AT&T repair station and complain about the phone three times, you have the right to ask for another phone equal to the one you have if the same one is no longer offered. That is within the one year manufacturer warranty.

I have the Eternity 2 and have had the same problem. But much more with my phone as well. I finally after 5 different ph calls to tech support and a 6 month old ph, had to settle for a refurbished phone in the exchange. Now I am having the same problem. Last nite my phone was sitting on my desk while I was on the computer and it just shut down, on its on, not even touching the phone. This is the first time I have had such a problem with any of ATT phones. I have had my service with them for over 9 years, and this phone is the first of all my phones and so many problems. I am very pleased with my service, but not this phone. Take it back before the first 30 days or you will end up with a refurbished instead of a new one. good luck

I bought a Solstice two weeks ago. It also experienced the random shutdowns. I took it back, and it shut down while the salesperson was looking at it. So he gave me a replacement Solstice.
Guess what? The replacement also randomly shuts down. Not as often as the first but it still does.

I owned an original soltice but it broke so i got this one thinking it would be better. It may be newer and more updated with the times. Open up the phone take the battery out and look at the manufacturer...China. The manufacturer for the original solstice is Korea. That it a very good phone and Korea makes high quality goods. Oh ya and i have experienced the shut down too.

I am having the same problem with mine and it is seriously making me mad. Should I try to get a new one or get a different phone altogether?

It it's frustrating you, try going for round two and getting a new one that should be replaced under warranty. How long have you had the phone? You could get a different phone instead, but it would have to be at your own expense, out-of-pocket outside of your contract...

I got my first Samsung Soltice II in June...I am now on my 3rd! All three have shut down or restarted on their own, leaving me to never know when my phone is on or off. My screen freezes up on me....sometimes when leaving a voice mail...so you can imagine how long and interesting that message is to the listener! These phones are JUNK.
I'm heading in the the customer center tomorrow to work on either my 4th or ANOTHER PHONE. So disgusted.
Been nice so far, but not gonna be a happy customer tomorrow!

I am on my 5th Solstice II phone. All 5 shut down on a random basis. SOmetimes the phone come back on, sometimes not. I have also sent the phone to Samsung for repair. It did the same thing the day I got it back. ATT & Samsung does not want to do the right thing and say this is a bad phone. It has defective firmware/software problems from the start. ATT & Samsung have terrible customer service. They make so difficult for the customer. You never talk to the same person twice and you have repeat the same thing every time you call warranty department. Also, most of the time you are talking to somebody in India, who I have a hard time of understanding.

I am having the same issue with my original Soltice and my replacement does the same too. The replacement has only done it once, but I have only had it 3 days now.
My original Solstice 2 was doing this at least once per day. It didnt matter if I was on a call, testing or idle. It never turned back on. So if it was in my pocket, I would never know when it powered off.
Im not impresses with this phone at all and think its one of the worst out there.

We gave our daughter a Samsung Solstice II for her birthday back in May. Within a few weeks she began having the same shutdown problem that I have been reading about here except, her screen would turn a purple color then shut off. We took the phone to the warranty center and received a replacement. That very same night the phone did the same shutdown like the original phone. She kept it for about a week and the problem continued and became more frequent. It happened during text messaging, while attempting to make calls and even when just sitting. So back to the AT&T warranty center for another phone.
The phone again had the same issue, purple screen and shuts off. We called the 800 number and talked with a representative who referred us to the warranty 800 number. Unfortunately the warranty center was closed but we will talk to them tomorrow and see what happens. It has been our experience that with the phones they seem to have the 3 strikes and your out policy which means we are expecting to change the phones to a different but comparable phone. I'll post back and let you all know how it goes.

Got this thing as a company phone and its doing the same thing. So I dont know if getting it replaced will help or not. Not a good thing when you are on call. Would avoid this phone unless it shutting down out of the blue doesnt bother you . This sounds like an OS issue you would think they could upgrade it and fix this.

I got this phone in April 2011 and it started shutting of the day I got it. At first it wasn't too bad, just once or twice a month. But in September it started doing it atleast 15-20 times per day. It could be sitting there, I could try to send a message, or even an incoming message seems to make it shut off. Sometimes also when I try to make a phone call. I called AT&T in November and first they tried to "update" it, which didn't help. The next time I called, they sent me a new battery and charger. No good. Next time, they said it was a network problem and they did troubleshooting and wanted me to monitor it for 24 hours, as if that was going to change anything. The next time I called, the person told me it was a UNIQUE FEATURE OF THE PHONE! Seriously!?!?
She said when it switches towers it shuts off, and the only way to fix it was to manually shut it down every time a sent a text or wanted to make a call. Uh, yeah right. What a bunch of bull. So, I had my AT&T representative call and they sent me a refurb. Now it does the exact same thing. My warranty is up in April, but it doesn't look like another phone is probably going to do me much good. This phone is a piece of C.R.A.P.
{please keep it courteous}

I have 2 new Solstice II phones for over a year now and both of them continue to shut down by itself every 2 days or so. I worked with ATT customer care, repair center, warranty department to no avail. ATT offers discount for a different phone. I can not understand why ATT wants the customer to pay more to get another phone knowing that the SAMSUNG Solstice II is a lemon. ATT should step up to the plate to offer another phone for the customers who purchased this badly designed phone that does not work with the ATT wireless network without shutting down every few days by itself. It is highly frustrating working with ATT, not very customer focus at all. Since the phones are under warranty I then worked with SAMSUNG repair center in Texas to try to identify the cause of the auto shutdown issue. SAMSUNG repair center tries to help fix the shut down problem but could not duplicate the problem with my phone. I performed a controlled experiment with both of my Solstice II phones to try to identify the cause. I believe I found the cause. If the Solstice II phone is turned on without the ATT SIM chip installed then the Solstice II phone will not shut down. It will shut down every two days once the ATT SIM chip is installed into the unit. Right now I am trying to convince SAMSUNG repair center in Texas to install the latest ATT SIM chip to a Solstice II phone to try to find the cause of the auto shut down problem. Perhaps the SAMSUNG technician can take the action to resolve the auto shut down issue. I will report any new status from SAMSUNG at this forum.

It appears to me that it must be a common problem from what I've been reading. Mine does the same thing. I did everything possible to solve the problem including a Master Reset. That didn't work either. It's more than annoying.

We talked with AT&T and tried to get our Solstice II's replaced, which we felt they should. Our THREE Solstice's shut down whenever they darned well please....in the middle of things, when you can LEAST afford for them to do it..... whenever. We contacted AT & T and they told us that sure, they could replace them, but it'd cost us $50 per phone and the new phones had to be the exact model as the ones we're having problems with. OMG - SO not a fix for the problem.

oh and BTW - they told us that the fix for this problem is for us to turn the phone off once a day.... HELLO? Isn't that the same as IT turning itself off? Besides, it didn't work. I turned mine off and on daily and it STILL turns itself off whenever it wants.
