The HTC Sense interface automatically and frequently connects to the internet to download weather information and other stuff. This is normal. The Android HTC phones do that same thing. This is one of the reasons that ATT is requiring people have data plans with smartphones. The constant use of internet data is becoming the norm, so they don't want people getting outrageous surprise data charges if they don't have a data plan.

I've noticed the same thing on my new Tilt 2. I check the connections from time to time and see MEdia Net is connected. I go into the Connections settings and see Data Connection has turned itself on.
My concern is that I'm burning up plan data minutes while this connection is happening. I've caught it once where it had been connected for a couple of hours, and I have not idea what might have been downloading.
It seems this is normal, as the first responder indicated. However, does this add significantly to the data usage?
Thanks

Unless you're actively browsing/surfing the net, streaming audio/video or using the Exchange email service, automatic program updates are not that significant. I also have the Tilt2 and am connected to an Exchange Server for my email and rarely go over 1gb a month.

I'm not using the Exchange service, just having the phone check a Gmail account every 15 minutes. Should I be okay with my 200MB/month plan, or am I going to have to keep monitoring the phone and shut down MEdia Net frequently? I don't do a whole lot of streaming or anything like that at all.
Thanks

I use my phone moderately and push GMail (only every hour, and not that much email) over Exchange, and I am almost always under 200mb.

Thanks. Since it's basically my first month of data service, I'll just have to keep monitoring my usage to see what I need to do to keep it under 200MB. When I'm at home, I always try to use my Wi-Fi router, but I continually catch a Media Net connection on my phone and have to manually disconnect the data connecton on my Tilt 2.
On the Tilt 2, is there any way to check how much data is going in/out from your phone at any given time?
Thanks
