htc vivid update server unavailable

hi i have an htc vivd and have been trying to update to the new ice cream sandwich and everytime i go to att software update it says server unavailable anyone have any fixes?

I was having the same problem. Now mine is saying its connected to a PC or a USB and its not ,and will not let me download. Talk about frustrating!!! Please fix this or let me know what I need to do. Thanks!!!

Friends, update through "settings" still does not work and looks like it is going to be difficult for it to work if it is not working now. However I was able to update my vivid by dailing the code "*#*#682#*#*"  and the download should start within 10secs

It's probably due to server overload folks. The best course of action is wait and try again later.

Alternatively you can install the update on your PC and install the update from there.

Could you please explain how to download the update to a PC? Yes, it says that you can all over the press release and the Vivid Update site, but I don't see a link to download it to my computer so I can sideload it.  The oinly instructions on the site are to use the AT&T Software Update via the device, so any clarification on this would be much appreciated.  My Vivid has not shown that there is an update available yet and I have tried last night for several hours and this morning several times.  Everytime I tap to check for update it says checking, then just goes right back to the screen saying Check for Update again.

I get the same message on my HTC Vivid. I'm sure it's exactly as you all said - congestion - but was the HTC Vivid that popular that it's taken the servers down? On a side note, I think this is affecting my Samsung Galaxy Note b/c it keeps telling me that I have an update but the servers are down.

The update can also be downloaded via your phone being connected to the PC. Not sure if it's automatic, but never hurts to check!

I even went as far as downloading HTC Sync, and still no option for the update.  There is obviously a file that hasn't been uploaded in order to sideload the software, and for some reason or another my Vivid is not finidng the update.  I'm not even getting a server busy message.

I doubt it would be automatic, I've never seen an Android updated deployed in that way.   I suspect that there is a link that AT&T just has not posted yet.

The folks on XDA have an 11 page thread going about getting (or in some cases, not getting) the update.  Nobody has mentioned downloading to PC, and the ones that are getting it, are doing so OTA.  If those guys haven't figured out how to do it, its probably not possible yet.

So uh how am I going to download this update from HTC's website... and it's an exe file... I have a Mac. There should be another option.

Hate to say this but I don't think it is because of congestion due to ICS being released yesterday folks...since we have been in the dark about when the actual update would occur, I have been checking daily for weeks now for the update and have every single time gotten the Error-Server unavailable.  So I am thinking it must be some kind of internal issue affecting a lot of people.

I have to agree - I really think it's a server issue on AT&T.  Unless there is a ridiculous low capacity of the server - I really doubt that the HTC Vivid was THAT popular of a phone to have locked up the server for over a day.  Even before AT&T's text message went out (I just got it tonight), the server was unavailable.  If it was the SGSII, then maybe I'd believe it but even that is a stretch.

Well, maybe theres a problem somewhere else. Have you asked at&t about your problems, or even called HTC?
The wifi is the best way to go, in my opinion, but if yours says no updates, then idk my friend. Mine worked, dont see why yours wouldnt.

I'm pretty sure that the problem is something within AT&T's server. The Vivid was, and still is, a VERY popular phone. I know because i sell them almost everyday. Doin the *#*#682#*#* worked for me when I was helping my friend update their phone but through the "Check for Updates" it would only say the error.

These are the instructions I received from HTC regarding my HTC Inspire 4G:

If you are experiencing this "Server Unavailable" when trying to download the update over the air, the only option we have here at HTC would be to manually update the phone's through your computer. In order to do this, you will need to download first the latest version of HTC Sync. To get this, you will go to www.htc.com/www/help. Once on here, you will go halfway down the page and see HTC Sync for all HTC Android phones. You will go through and download this onto your computer and install it.

Once you have that downloaded and installed, you will go to http://www.htc.com/us/support/htc-inspire-4g-att/software-updates. On here, you will see the HTC Inspire™ 4G for AT&T ROM Update. Once you have this downloaded on your computer, you will then put the phone into Sync mode. To do this, you will go to menu>settings>connect to pc>default connection type>HTC Sync. Then you will plug the phone into the computer.

Once the computer and the phone connect to one another, you will go to your downloads folder, and run the RUU update you downloaded off the HTC Website. This will provide you with on screen directions on how the update goes onto the computer.
