Just a heads-up....if one gets the 'you are not subscribed' message, restart your box.

Just found out that UVerse is offering a free preview of the Japanese TV channel (3680) because of the recent earthquake.
You might have to reboot your STB to recieve it though.
I dont speak Japanese but you can change the language with the botton right Zoom button to English and it seems most spoken words are being translated but not all.

Wow! I know it doesn't seem to happen often but it's nice to see big companies do some good. Too bad Most people probably won't even notice unless they do one of those "annoying" messages. Thumbs up from me though.

As was mentioned - reboot the STV's by holding in the power button for 5 seconds. After it restarts (1-2 minuyes) you should see the channel.

Not that I'm complaining, but of the hundreds of thousands of subscribers that received this message (times 4 boxes in my case), tens of thousands like me would have been interested enough to tune to the channel, got the "not subscribed" message and figured "oh well". Perhaps one in a hundred of those would have known to come to the forum and rebooted the box. How much extra effort would it have been to include those instructions in the message.
OK, I guess I am complaining, but it was nice for them to do a good thing.
Now if only the channel was in English....
God bless the victims and all those suffering tonight.

How do I get this 'free' channel? Some are posting something about an 'stv' or an 'stb' reboot. What is this?

STB = Set Top Box. It is the U-verse box connected to your TV. To reboot the box, how down the power button for 5 seconds and release. The box will reboot. When the reboot is complete, you should have TV Japan.

1st hold down the button on your TV Box for 10 seconds or until it blinks out. (tv box, NOT 2wire box)
2nd wait for it to reset and try channel 3680.
3rd while on 3680 hit the info button on your remote.
4th scroll to the right to Audio Language and change to English.

Message for free Japan News Channel displayed @ 11:00 CDT. Channel 3680 displayed after STB reset as discussed previous.
I would like to thank AT&T for this move. Thousands of people are concerned over loved ones living in Japan. This gives them another outlet to watch for news.
Living in the midwest, I cannot even imagine the vast devastation caused by this earthquake.

It's not total English. When I tried it on the day it was first on, I got Japanese, then Spanish, then English.
Would be nice to have CC in the language you select!

I wish it could be around longer! That channel was so cool! plus it helped me learn more japanese!
I wish AT&T had more channels from other countries, or at least offered them in the package price, not as a separate option

I think this is a very caring thing that AT&T has done in allowing those in our country who have friends and family in Japan to keep track of what's going on there during this crisis; and from the Japanese people's perspective. My daughter stayed with a host family in Japan for a year while attending college there on an exchange program. She just returned last summer. So she understands the Japanese language and loves watching the channel. We'll like subscribe after the free period is taken away.
Thank you AT&T, classy move from a classy company.
A VERY happy Uverse customer.
