Have you updated your iPhone to the latest OS? The 4G indicator came with that update. Note that the speed will be the same; only the indicator changed.

Are you and your son standing in the same place when you see the different indicators? If this is when you are in different places in the same city, not every tower has the enhanced backhaul necessary for 4G.

If he had the iPhone 4S, and you had the iPhone 4, that could be the issue, the iPhone 4 doesn't support 4G speeds.

Also, only the iPhone 4s will display 4G. The iPhone 4 will not display 4G because it is not hspa+ capable.
