I'm giving an iphone 4s to my 12 year old daughter for Christmas. I would like to monitor her text messages and email. For starters, can anyone recommend software that I can install to monitor her phone? Is there any app from itunes that will work? I've research a dozen or so companies, such as (spybubble, Mobile-Spy, etc) and the software looks perfect. However, all of these companies indicate you must jailbreak the iphone before the software can be downloaded to the phone. Won't this void the warranty from Apple/AT&T? It appears I need to go through itunes to purchase this kind of app....but, I sure can't find one. Any advice on ways to monitor the phone?

Smart Limits does not monitor text and/or emails. Smart Limits is anything but smart! There are too many ways around Smart Limits. I am in the same situation with the kids. I have been unable to find anything that will work. What I do is block their use of the internet, the ability to download apps and they are not supposed to delete emails or text messages. I will spot check their text messages on the OLAM to make sure they follow the rules. I also don't allow any of my kids to have their cell phones in their rooms at night. I feel I am one of the few parents out there that monitor their children's cell phone use.
You can pay for "Smart Limits" from AT&T to moniter this type of thing...other then that you're out of luck. I wouldn't recomend a jailbreak.

Facci points out correctly that this is a parenting issue, not a technology one.
Any technology you deploy will be bypassed by the child, either directly or indirectly.
Manual monitoring procedures, expectations of behavior, and close supervision are your main tools. AT&T will give you the phone number for every SMS sent/recived, but even that is now seamlessly bypassed by iMessage, between iOS devices where no SMS is sent.
Good luck. The good news is there isn't many years between 12 and 16, and once they hit 16 and can drive all you can hope for is that they've learned enough to keep themselves safe. If 16 seems too early, make it 18. Or 21. It all comes really fast.

They are so many I can actually suggest for you. Hellospy, mobile spy, bossy etc. all of them are for free, but I would rather suggest Copy10 although it is not free but I assure to you it is totally safe for your privacy compare to those free software which your Credit card, password etc. are exposed.
