Has anyone been able to leasurely walk in an ATT or Apple store & buy a 3G iPhone yet?

Have the lines died down & the inventory caught up for anyone to be able to just walk into their local ATT or Apple store & pick up a new iPhone without waiting in any lines yet?  I am on vacation this week & I am hoping that when I return to Atlanta on Sunday, the mad rush will be over & I will be able to walk in & pick up a 16GB black phone without the hassle of waiting in line or placing an order through direct fufillment.

When I spoke with my at&t store today, I was told that they would not be able to get any more shipments in until the end of August or beginning of September. They said that until then everyone would have to get one through direct fulfillment. Who knows though, every store may be different.

Also, of all the phone types, the 16GB black is the scarcest because it seems to be the most popular.  The probability of just walking into a store in Atlanta and finding an iPhone for sale is probably very low, and the chance of it being a black 16, is lower still.  Right now, many places seem to be just getting the direct fulfillment backorders, not restock to sell to anyone who walks in the door, so you may have to go the DF route, unless you want to go eBay.

On the plus side, there probably won't be a line at the store.

i was able to just walk in on saturday and in 15 minutes i was out with my phone in my hand....our apple store is also fully stocked with the white 16gb and of coure black 8gb...only sold out of the black 16gb

That makes sense. When I checked the status of the one that I ordered Saturday the 12th (the 94th order from my zip code) it showed that nearly all of the first 60 were ordered on the 11th and shipped out on the 15th. Nothing shipped out from number 60 through 213 the end of.

A co-worker of mine walked in to the Southlake, TX, store yesterday afternoon and was able to get one without waiting too long.  I believe he was in the store for a total of an hour and a half.  They were out of the 16 GB black so he got the white.

twice, i was very lucky, two 16 gigers , one at mall att store last sunday, 30 min wait, other the next day at downtown portland att store 20 min wait.

I wouldn't call mine leisurely, had to wait an hour or so in line and this was going to the Rosedale Mall Apple store in MN after 1pm. I was able to get a 16GB iPhone 3G black before I ever got my direct fullfilment through AT&T. So if you don't mind waiting in line making sure they have it in stock ahead of time Apple store is the way to go.

On Saturday I waited in line for 30 minutes at my local ATT store and got a 16gb 3G phone in black.  The local Apple store was out of stock of the black ones.

Called my local Apple store today and the had phones in, even though the Apple website said they were out.  Drove 30 minutes up there and there were 3 people in line, had a new Iphone in 20 minutes after a disasterous and frustrating experience on Saturday.

One problem (nothng can be easy!), the rep when he sync'd the phone said the 3G wasn't on but that it should come on shortly.  An hour later still no 3G and spoke to both AT&T and Apple Care specialists who could not help.  They said take it home and sync it.

Later today I was near the Apple store again and stopped in.  The staff actualy remebered me and were eager to help.  Better yet, when they couldn't fix it they reassured me that they had one 8G left and that it would be mine but asked to take a walk to the AT&T store first and give them a shot.  Sure enough, by re-adding the data plan AT&T fixed it.

The morale of the story is that the local AT&T and Apple folks worked together and fixed a problem.  They clearly knew each other and went out of their way to help without being territorial.  Let's remember that some good things are happening out there and it is not all gloom and doom!

Just got mine, 16gb Black.  At the local Apple Store (Southdale Mall, MN)..  They had a bunch of each kind in stock and no line whatsoever.

I had an order placed with AT&T at 10:00AM July 11th, but no more.  There's no question that people who had placed orders after me at the same store received their phones before me.  I know one who placed an order at about 3PM that same day at the same store and got their phone today (same model I ordered).  Meanwhile, my order is still backordered with no end in site.

Moral of this story: Check your Apple stores (if you're lucky enough to have one near by).

yup got one Monday morning.....no line at the apple store....even let me buy it 90 minutes before the store technically opened.

I would stay away from the att stores.....bad bad customer service..

In the Apple stores in all of Georgia, there's only one that has any iPhone 3G's and it's just 16 gig white ones.

Call the Apple stores directly - find out whn their UPS truck comes.  It seems that the Apple web site is just worse case.  There were no Apple stores in NJ that showed any stock on Wednesday night yet I know of 3 that had them for at least part of Thursday.
