When I connect to itunes and start the update procedure all appears ok. I go through the normal procedure and end up agreeing to the terms...... It appears to be downloading for a bit, but then I get the following message. "There was a problem downloading the software for the Iphone. The network connection timed out."
My network and internet connection are fine. I've been surfing the net and downloading lots of stuff prior to and after the multiple attempts of downloading the update. I really want to get this update, since it is the fix to the sms vulnerbility that has been discussed on these forums and in the news. Any ideas? Thanks

It is timing out at Apple's location. MY bet is that there are way too many people downloading. I would recomend waiting a bit and then try again.

Is there a backup running to an offisite location like Mozy? It's also possible that so many people are trying to update that the server is just overwhelmed. I'd try it again in an hour or so. Maybe a reboot of the computer first?

If you aren't already aware of this, it'll be listed in the
STORE tab under availiable downloads.
iTunes will pick up where it stopped.
Hope this helps

I have the same problem.
I have no solution yet, but I might contribute with some observations that might help.
I have two similar iPhone 3GS in the house. They are connected to two different laptops.
Same network, newest iTunes on both etc..
One updates fine.. no problem t all.
The second one (unfortunately mine :-( has failed like 6+ times. No use rebooting, using cabled network instead of WIFI, turning of antivirus, etc..
Both PCs are running Windows Vista.
The successful PC is a strong HP laptop. Vista 64 bit
The unsuccessful PC is a quite slow Fujitsu Siemens Lifebook P7230. Vista 32 bit
My best theory yet is that it is connected to PC performance in some way.. But iTunes has not failed before during normal downloads.. Strange..

Everytime I try to download any OS update i always get that error and a error code of like 3259. I have tried everything in Apples tech site to resolve the issue. But in their forums one of the people there pointed me to a direct link to the download:
This link is for 3GS 4.0 software only! Do not download if oyu dont have a 3GS.

Update of previous posting ...
I succeded by turning off the ESET NOD32 antivirus before I started the download.
I also run on cable an not WIFI - but I do not think that's what did the trick.
It is also an observation that the download fails when the download is complete.
My best guess is that a combination of a fairly slow PC and ESET NOD32 occupied with some file lock, trying to inspect a file being closed, moved etc.. is what causes the problem.
I also found an old posting mentioning ESET NOD32 challanges connected to iPhone updates.
Also solved by turning it off.
Good luck!

Yes.... if you disable the eset nod 32 or other hardcore firewall it will let you download the update. No problem.

Same problem I had. You first have to update both your computer and itunes. After that, plug in your iphone and hit restore and download will complete without that message. You will then be prompted to use your backup and your iphone will then have your original data. If you have never backed up your iphone on itunes, you will probably have lost all of your data from pushing the restore button. Hope this helps
