IPhone and G3

I have a G3 technology LG phone and am thinking about getting an iPhone. Will my G3 gsm chip work in the iPhone and will I loose the speed advantadge of G3??

You can not use another sim card besides the one that comes with the iphone.

The iPhone does not support 3G so your maximum speed will be EDGE

First, it'd 3G, not G3. 3G is short for third generation. As other posters have mentioned, you must activate the iPhone with the SIM with which it comes. You cannot take the iPhone SIM out once activated and use the data connection on another phone. The iPhone data plan is for use in the iPhone only.

You can connect to Wi-Fi and it is much faster than EDGE

Even though the iPhone only has EDGE, you can still connect to Wifi which is a lot more faster than 3G. Not many phones right now can connect to Wifi. So that is a huge advantage of carrying around an iPhone.

3G isn't yet available on the iPhone. Its pretty well expected that Apple will introduce a 3G iPhone sometime in 2008. Of course, that will be a new iPhone, existing iPhone are stuck with EDGE. 3G isn't all its cracked up to be however. The power draw is enormous, battery life will suffer greatly and believe it or not, more battery is consumed when the data rate drop vs. full speed (this is because the data rate drop with poor signal and the wireless hardware has to "try harder" to get the data through). And my experience with 3G is that atleast in my area you rarely get full data rate.

Ok question. i have a iphone and when i get into a WIFI spot i can connect on how come i can NOT get on the internet and go to websites? i always get an error. everybody is so hung up on the iphone so called WI FI why wont it work on my iphone when i have a connection.

And, as other posters have written, they have been charged PPU (pay per use) data for taking their iPhone SIMs out and using data in another phone (like a Blackberry or PDA phone). I would be especially wary of using an iPhone SIM in a Blackberry or PDA, as you really have no recourse should AT&T charge you since the data plans on those phones are more expensive than the iPhone plan. Let me be clear on this...you cannot take the iPhone SIM out of your phone and use it to access data on another phone. The iPhone data plan is meant for use only in the iPhone.

Yes you can take the Sim out and use on a other phone and data plan will work I am using as we speak but you can't take a Sim from a non Iphone activation and use it on the Iphone. If you ask at the AT&T store they would tell you the same it is no secret. So if you don't now don't say but you may ask.

My SIM card in my iPhone says it is 3G enabled. All we need is Apple to enable 3G and we're off to the races.

All ATT SIM cards show 3G now. That has nothing to do if the phone is capable or not. There is nothing for Apple to enable as there is no hardware 3G capable radio in the iPhone. If you want a 3G iPhone you will have to buy a new iPhone when they release a 3G model.

IMHO 3G is so overrated. Just before I got my iPhone I had the Moto Q9h (a 3G enabled handset). I compared running SlingPlayer (a data hog) on both 3G and EDGE, and honestly there wasn't that much of a difference in the speed or the quality of my video streaming. The only differernce for me was the inability to receive data while using voice, which I could now care a less about. I ended up switching the Q9h to run on EDGE all the time just to increase my battery life.

I also don't see a difference in the websurfing speed. I was taking a class this past Saturday and needed to get some info off the internet via my iPhone, EDGE speeds were just fine and again IMHO just as fast.... or at least fast enough for me.

I don't miss 3G on the iPhone at all. WiFi is fine, EDGE is fine. For me personally I won't upgrade to the 3G iPhone if and when it comes out.

It also depends on your EDGE connection. In Baton Rouge, LA, I averaged a pretty zippy 200 kbps. If you're in an area with questionable coverage, that speed can quickly nosedive.

I thought I'd die when I went from the Treo 750 (3G) to the iPhone (EDGE). I found that I'm in WiFi 90% of the time. During that other 10%, I'm unlikely to have time to do any surfing. To look up something on Google or use Google Maps, though, EDGE is fine. I never really miss 3G. I DO sometimes miss the ability to download and send email while on the phone, though, when I'm on EDGE and not WiFi. I also think the voice quality is a bit better on 3G.

I get between 90-175kbps on Edge and between 450-1000kbps on 3G here in Colorado Springs. At times the Edge is almost unusable even for just light web surfing its so slow.

I'm not sure why everyone is in an uproar over 3G. Granted it's newer/better technology than EDGE but doesn't AT&T have even newer and faster technology? i.e., HSDPA?

Sometimes EDGE is laboriously slow which is when I look for mobile webpages, but other times it's really not bad. In fact I compared my iPhone on EDGE to a Verizon Voyager and the iPhone was much quicker. In all fairness though Verizon has done an update to the Voyager since then and I do understand it upped the speed.

Yes, though in talking about it people usually spell it out.

I'm wondering if AT&T is going to price the plans differently for that phone as opposed to the current iPhone. If the plan wasn't affordable I would not have switched from Verizon-not to say I would run out and get the newer iPhone right away anyway.

There's no telling what the 3G iPhone data plan will look like. I'd have to believe that it'll be more expensive than the current $20 iPhone data plan, as 3G phones chew up a lot more data than non-3G phones (and as they might face a revolt on the part of their 3G PDA users if they didn't raise the price of the iPhone data plan or lower the PDA data plans).
