I own a white, 32gb iPhone 3Gs, but I am wanting to upgrade to the iphone4, however I am not eligible to upgrade until January of 2011 (missed the cutoff date by 12 days!!! >.<). However there is another line on our family plan that is eligible for an upgrade (this line already has the unlimited iPhone data plan). Would it be possible to upgrade that line to get the new iPhone4 at upgrade price for myself, and retain my number?

Well, the problem that im seeing is that doesnt the new iPhone have a different type of SIM card?, I couldnt simply switch the SIMs from my old 3Gs to my new iPhone 4 if this is the case.

No, what you should do is upgrade the iPhone on the secondary line. Once you have the phone, take it to your local ATT retail store and have them switch the EMEI #'s and sim info.
You should be fine doing this, I did this myself last year.

Yes you can upgrade that line and then once the line is upgraded you go into the store and do an IMEI swap and you can get keep your number.

This past christmas when my sister wanted an iPhone she was not eligible for an upgrade but my mother was. My mother called AT&T and they said my mom could use her upgrade for my sister. She didn't have to take the phone back to the store they put my sister's sim into the iPhone when my mother bought it. You can just tell them you are using line a's upgrade but to put the sim in for line b's. This way you don't have the hassle of going to the store twice.
