So I upgraded my Iphone 3g to OS 4.0. Having some SERIOUS issues. NO 3g at all. Prior to the upgrade I always had perfect service at work and at home and always in 3g. Now I get Searching... then it goes to 5 bars and an E. Then maybe 10 seconds later I get searching... rinse repeat. I've reinstalled os 4.0 fresh twice. Setup as a new phone even at the cost of losing everything. I kind of hit a wall here... Please advise.

HAHAHHHHAHAHAH
so someone just walked into my office with their iPhone saying something is wrong, and then another. Apparentely this has nothing to do with my 4.0 upgrade. REALLY bad timing i guess!

Probably the towers nearby. I've always had problems with mine in my concrete office and at home with the trees. iOS4 or not it's annoying.

All the verizon peeps are good to go though. Is it simply that there are two different towers? One for ATT one for verizon?

I don't think anything is wrong with your network. Since I upgraded my 3G to OS 4 my phone takes about thirty minutes to an hour after it has signal to actual be able to work with that signal. Something about OS 4 slows down the phone's ability to communicate with it's network. I've had a wifi connection for about the last twenty minutes and my phone can't connect to the internet because it can't find signal. Same thing is happening with the 3G networks.
Hopefully Apple gets this fixed pronto.

No problems where and no problems with a few other iPhone 3G or 3GS upgrades. They are all working fine.

yes, they use different towers most of the time and different signals. It could be the 4.0 update. The iphone has been notorious for dropped calls and poor signal. It's an Apple issue more than a AT & T one. People with AT & T have had an iPhone and another phone side by side and the other phone will have full bars and the iPhone less. Hopefully the new iPhone with it's new hardware and antenna built into the body will get better service. Many people in past updates have experiences more or less service. When the 3G first came it was worse, but with updates has improved.

There was one user over on DSLReports that had this exact same issue. He corrected it by doing an full restore of the iPhone.
If you have synced you phone recently then you have a backup of your iPhone's content. Now, turn the phone off and once it's off press and hold the Home (bottom button) while you are inserting the USB cable. The phone will now enter an emergency recovery mode which will simply be a black screen with a picture of a USB cable and the iTunes icon. iTunes will detect an iPhone in recovery mode. Now, tell it to restore the iPhone's firmware and if it asks if you want to restore from a recent backup, say yes. Warning, this will take some time to do this process so sit back, grab some coffee, and hopefully by the time it's done you'll have 3G and WiFi working correctly.

Did you ever get this fixed. Since my update to OS4.0, I've lost all 3G ability as well. Makes me crabby. Used to have 3G service all the time.

OK. I just figured it out, at least on my phone. When my iPhone updated, my "Enable 3G" was switched to off. Take a look: Settings, General, Network, Enable 3G ... move to on. doh'

called exactly what the other tier 1/2 vendors are doing, they all charge extra for tethering, the iphone is not the only one, RIM, WM, android phones all get a extra tethering charge

Don't think it's the network. It's a crapshoot on all older phones. I have about 1 of every 5 apps I open just randomly quitting...it's like working on a pc and annoying heck. Plus, being a 3G person, I don't see much benefit from the 4.0. Woopee...folders...I can have 1000 apps instead of the 100 or so that I had before. I don't think so.
You can downgrade software; search macworld.com to learn how.
And ATT/Apple: Please send us a 4.1 soon!

I really think it's 4.0, not a network issue. Either way, I'm googling how to reinstall the old software until I see a 4.1 come out!

There is no way to downgrade unless your phone was jailbroken prior to upgrading to OS4 and your SHSH blob was saved. Without meeting those requirements there is absolutly no way of going back. I am just passing this information on so your post does not get other peoples hopes up. There are big catches to being able to go backwards.

I have to agree, I upgraded my Iphone 3gs(32gb) to OS 4.0 about three weeks ago and since the upgrade I've been having the same SERIOUS issues. NO 3g at all. Prior to the upgrade I always had perfect service as well at home which is also where i work. Now it drops everyone's calls NO exceptions. I can't go on much longer, its my work phone. It has to be the new OS, are there any new updates?

Sure there is because I've done it. No my 3g was not jailbroke before either. I will say the techniques available to do this are not for the masses, but anyone who remotely knows their way around a computer can do this. I chose the method found on modmyi.com vs. the methods on lifehacker or macworld.
I'm not condoning modding or hacking, I just find it ridiculous that Apple doesn't give you a easy way to revert back to a previous working firmware while they fix a update that they obviously slopped outwith little to no testing.

There was plenty testing of OS4. Just not all of us experienced these issues. I had all betas on my 3GS and never once experienced any of the issues people are currently reporting. Bugs will get through testing its a fact of life.

You could try the instructions in this link to downgrade from iOS4. I did this successfully when I was on one of the horrible Beta releases on my 3GS and it worked fine. I have an iMac btw.

Ever since I upgraded my 3Gs to OS4 it locks up several times a day and I have to turn it off and on again to be able to make or accept calls. When I go to dial it just sits there and eventually says call failed. When I call my phone it goes into vm after 4 rings. Really annoying as I don't know when it will lock up so I'm missing some calls. Never happened before OS4.

Cmon, the towers didn't change when he added OS4!
My iphone is dog slow and way buggy since "upgrading" to OS4. Phone loses its mind regularly. I can fix it with a reboot, but it recurs later. I try to open Maps and half the time it fails to open and reverts to main menu screen. Sometimes I'm trying a place search on maps and the search fails, it reverts to Main Menu, and the maps app has lost all record of the search. Sometimes I click the map menu icon for Find My Location and it does the same thing: fails and goes back to Main Menu. Doesn't matter whether I've got wifi, 3G, or nothing but cell signal, nor does my location matter. Five bars + wifi right here at my desk dosn't help. Clearly an internal, software problem. I tell ya, this thing is acting like a PC with no virus protection! At least it still reboots . . .
Truly, this is like when I got Windows Vista on a new PC and got so fed up I wiped the disk and installed XP. Where do I go to get the latest OS 3.x again. I've had it.
