Screen really hard to see

When I use my iphone outdoors, especially in the sun, it is nearly impossible for me to see the screen. Most times I have to hunker over and use my body to make like a little cave just so I can see the screen. I have a 3GS. Is this common to smart phones or do I have to tweak a setting or 2 to make the screen easier to see in the day light.

It is common. You could try an anti- glare screen protector.
