Stuck on "Ringer (Headset)" rendering my iPhone as a $400 two-way pager/e-mail device.

This started happening to me before updating to 2.0. Silly me, I thought that maybe by updating it to 2.0 this would be fixed. Not at all.

Here are my symptoms:

It's stuck to Ringer (Headphones).

While stuck like this, when I call or get a call, no one can hear a thing. I can't hear them and they can't hear me.

SOMETIMES if I have my headphones on I can hear them and they can't hear me. SOMETIMES they can hear me AND I can hear them.

If I am listening to music and unplug my headphones, the audio doesn't come out of the loudspeaker nor does it pause (which is what I'd expect).

Sometimes if I unplug my headphones, the iPod starts running and playing the first song on my library (alphabetically) which of course I can't hear because the speaker on my phone isn't working and my headphones have been unplugged.

I tried plugging in and out a headphone several times and no dice. I've tried rebooting it. Nothing. I've tried everything short of a restore, which I'll try tonight if I can't figure anything else out.

This morning I had my headphones plugged in and while playing a song, I started fiddling with the audio settings on the iPod (Max volume, etc.) I then unplugged my headset and hit the ringer up button and it still showed "Ringer (Headphones)" and then hit the ringer down and it worked as normal. I could hear my typing sounds and all other normal functions normally. Finally. After 3 days of it not working. I didn't even dare plug my headphones back... and 2 hours later, the phone went back to the "Ringer (Headphones)".

Ideas?

I bought my iPhone in January, if that helps.

I would back everything up and re-initialize the thing, meaning "Erase all contents and settings" and start over from scratch, not even doing a restore. You might "restore" the problem, although I don't know if that is possible.

Since this persisted thru the software update to 2.0 I would guess it's a hardware problem with one of the very few 'moving parts' that an iPhone actually has.  That being the metal finger that breaks a connection inside the headphone jack when a plug is inserted into the jack.  It seems that yours, when the plug is pulled out of the jack, doesn't restore contact telling the iPhone that nothing is plugged in now.

This happen to me just last weekend...I had been listening to my songs with my headset and got a call..I pushed the button on my headset to answer, but went a head and took off my headphones..Well I could not hear them so I pushed the speaker and then could hear them through that..Any way I went all that day having to push my speaker..Finally Sunday night I got the Idea...

Put my headphones back in my Iphone..and pushed the button again and it took it off of pause..Which I had no idea I had did this, but it worked..It's back to normal now..

I hope this is all that's wrong with yours..

I updated to version 2 yesterday morning...

According to my About screen it's "2.0 (5A347)".

Same thing or was there a revision I didn't know?

If you have an Apple Store nearby: go to the Apple web site, use the store locator to find the web site for your local store, and make an appointment at the Genius Bar.  They'll take care of you there.

This has happened to me a few times with my iphone, what fixed it for me was plugging my headphones back in and pulling them out slowly, I also took some canned air to the headphone slot, My guess was that it was a little dirty, and as i was pulling my headphones out the iphone got stock on headphone mode. I haven't had the problem since i cleaned it.

the earphone jack gets dirty sometimes; some will tell you that the problem was caused by pulling your headphones out too quickly
My iphone also had this problem, and I, simply, stuck a q-tip in the jack and cleaned it out.  worked like a charm.

Hey guys!
This issue is semi-resolved. I cleaned the jack and it happens less. If it does happen, I remove the headphones reeeeaaaal slooooow and that does it.
Annoying? VERY.

I would still make an appt at the genius bar at your closest Apple store just so they could go over it.
