Hey guys! So yesterday and today I received confirmation Emails form AT&T stating that my unlock requests for my Grandmother's iPhone and my Mother's iPhone 3GS have been approved and to follow the steps to restore in iTunes and confirm the unlock. Both iPhones received the "Congratulations, your iPhone has been unlocked." message after being restored. However, neither iPhone show's any actual signs of being unlocked. I'm not able to view any APN settings and the notorious "Carrier" option under Settings is not present. Both the iPhone and the iPhone 3GS have the latest software updates installed, iPhone OS 3.3.1 and iOS 5.1 respectively. Is there an issue with my iPhone unlock process? I used the de-activated AT&T SIM cards that originally came with the iPhones to do the procedure. Each iPhone has been wiped clean. I don't have access to any other network's active SIM card to test the success of the unlock procedure. Any advice, options, ideas and opinions and success stories are welcomed. I just want to be sure both the iPhone and the iPhone 3GS have been unlocked.
Solved! Go to Solution.

If you need proof, the cheapest option I know of is to get a T-Mobile prepaid SIM card for $10. It comes with 10 minutes on it. You can use the same one to test all the phones.
AT&T may have a GoPhone SIM card that you could throw a couple of dollars on to try it out. Some gas stations have prepaid SIM cards, too. I know that you have to pay for most SIM cards this way, and most of the ones that I have seen cost around $10 with no time on them.

Has anyone else been able to unlock their iPhone? If so, were you able to view the APN Settings?

I wish I've gotten a email confirmation right now, it has been 3 days since I've gotten my case number. I don't know why it has been taking this long.
If you don't mind, did you call in or used the chat support to get your case in? It seems that chat support takes prior to 5-7 days till the email is recieved, and like couple hours or minutes when the case is called through the phone.

I actually used the chat function at first, but a few hours later I decided to call in and request the unlock again. I received the first Email a day later and the second two days later.

My family's account is apart of the premier business accounts AT&T has. I just dialed *611 from my current iPhone, but I'm fairly certain that's still the business line.

Got the email yesterday morning and tried the process last night, but I never got the message that the unlock was successful. I also was using my old deactivated SIM, but I restored from the backup since I didn't want to lose all my information like the notes and other stuff.
Edit: Tried again this morning and this time I got the unlock message

When you go into Settings are you able to view APN Settings or a "Carrier" option?

I see Carrier under Settings -> About, but don't know where APN Setting would be. Carrier has AT&T 12.0 next to it, but it doesn't appear to be changable. However, it has my old deactivated AT&T SIM in it and the Network is "not available", so I'm not sure what it's supposed to read under these conditions. I guess the only way to know is to get a T-mobile SIM and see what happens when I put it in. I did notice that in the iTunes tab for the phone when plugged in, my phone number now says n/a instead of my phone number. Even my old not-yet-unlocked 3G with the decativated SIM still shows my phone number.

I believe you need to have a foreign carrier sim to see the APN setting.
On my recently unlocked AT&T 3G with a foreign sim I can see AT&T and T-mob networks.

I knew that the APN settings were not avaliable to locked AT&T iPhones but I do believe the unlocked models have this setting. It may not be present until the device is unlocked and used with another carrier. Has anyone seen this setting when placing, say a T-Mobile SIM card in an unlocked iPhone?

Att is unlocking the iPhones if they are eligible. It all depends on if that iPhone's status with ATT. As has been stated here, you would need to call ATT directly on the specific phone to see if it is eligible for unlocking.

Those menus only show up if you're on an unofficial carrier or if the carrier supports manual carrier selection and/or apn edits. Since AT&T doesn't meet either of those conditions, the menus won't appear. They will if you use a tmobile sim or some other regional carrier I have two AT&T unlocked iPhones and one that was purchased unlocked directly from apple. They all behave the same.

OK we will look into prob getting a cheap black iPhone 4
and if we go ahead ask the seller anything that can relate to details before
I consider anything!
My previous white iPhone 4 was 3 months old when I bought that of ebay locked to AT&T
so even if I had kept that then i would be waiting ages still for it to be even considered by AT&T to be unlocked
I think I did the right choice to Trade it in and get the 4S anyway!
btw thanks will look about all this if partner is tempted ![]()

At what point in the process do you get the message? after the restore of applications and data is complete or in the middle?
Thanks

In the middle. After the phone software is reinstalled, but just before it askes if you want to restore the data from a backup or restore as new.

I successfully unloclked my 4s. Use right click - backup
Don't use right click "restore from backup" Use the restore. Then you can use the backup after the Unlock message.

It's the at&t sim card that prevents you from seeing those items regardless of the sim lack. Pop in a non at&t sim card and they will magically appear.
