I ran a check on the system (iTunes) and everything checked out ok, but my computer is not recognizing my iPhone or my iPad (iPad and cable are new). Wondering if the problem is in the device or in the computer software? Any thoughts?

are you plugging into a USB hub or directly into the computer? If directly into the computer try a different USB port, if a hub plug it directly into the computer, the ipad and iphone can be picky on the USB ports. Also another check is to try a different USB device like a flash drive to make sure that the USB port is functional

try plugging it into a different USB and rebooting the computer/laptop and reboot your iphone. i had the same problem after rebooting it worked for me.
