So decided to switch the carrier and moved to Verizon and return AT&T's three Iphone 4S within 30 days. I could not return the one phone as my son is in US Army. He was on a training so he was out of touch with the world.
I paid early termination fee of $315 to AT&T and cost of the Iphone4 S is$215.00 Total is almost $540.
I called AT&T to unlock it. They asked me to contact Apple support. explained them that it cost me almost $540 and I can not use it. can you unlock it. they informed me they can not only AT&T.
So I am stuck with the phone cannot use or cannot sell it.
What's stopping you from selling the phone? All you have to do is mnake sure you state that the phone is locked to AT&T and cannot be unlocked.

Hello!
Sorry for my English :-)
I've got a situation that can allow only you (AT & T).
I am not a U.S. citizen, I am a citizen of Kazakhstan.
I bought a brand new smart phone Apple iPhone 4S (AT & T), "Without Contract" on the internet auction "EBAY".
The seller told me that the Apple iPhone 4S is unlocked, so it does not have a contract.
When I received it via Express Mail (USPS) found that even my Apple iPhone 4S is"LOCKED PRODUCT."
In this regard, I ask you to help me and explain how I can "UNLOCK" my Apple iPhone 4S?
Thank you for the help, with respect Edil

No

Not going to happen, the att iphone purchase at a subsidized price or a off contract price will not be unlock now or in the forseeable future. Sell it on Ebay and buy one in your country

If you had read this an other threads, you would know your iPhone is forever locked to ATT. You should have bought the your iPhone from the Apple store and paid for the unlocked version.

AT&T does not unlock locked US iPhones under any circumstances. You need to take up the issue with the person who sold you the phone if he said it was unlocked and it wasn't. Unfortunately, AT&T can't help you.

I only ask AT&T to unlock iPhones that are out of contract, but they couldn't care less, well maybe all of us should start writing to Tim Cook asking for help?

Why did you pay for a Locked to the AT&T
iPhone when you live outside the USA
There are handsets we sell in our stores
That aren't tied to any network called Sim Free
Buy one of these
Sell ur locked phone on eBay titled locked Sell to USA only!
Best of Luck

Your response doesn't make sense, if I paid for a phone while living in US and finished paying for my 2 years contract why can't I unlock the device and do with it as I please? Are you telling me that the $200-$400 that I paid doesn't mean anything and I could trash the phone for what AT&T cares? Maybe if the iPhone was free on contract I could accept this (it would almost be fair), but no way they aren't taking advantage if they charge big money for the phone locked on contract and they won't unlock it after the contract!
And why all other phones can be unlocked in this way except the iPhone? Finally for your information, until recently (I think last year) unlocked iPhones were not even an option in the US.

I'm not sure I buy that story but whether it is legitimate or not, I bet Tim Cook is getting bombarded with unlock requests.

I am an AT&T employee and the postings on this site are my own and don’t necessarily represent AT&T’s positions, strategies or opinions.

It's not really about not doing research. Until very recently, most of us didn't have any choice. At least now we have access to other carriers that will unlock it (for international use anyway). I know where I'm going once the "new iPhone" is out (assuming it supports LTE anyway).
To those defending the policy... why? I get that it's AT&T's policy, but that doesn't mean it can't be questioned or disapproved of. If AT&T did eventually decide to unlock iPhones at customer request, what you lose?

I highly doubt that story is real. Anyone can make up a fake story that Tim Cook CEO of apple got an AT&T iphone unlocked, but where are the pictures of the unlocked phone, screenshots of the email, or any sort of proof but a blog post. To this day, I haven't heard of any AT&T Iphones being unlocked by AT&T, and until I have evidence showing it's happened those blog posts are nothing more then a way to get hits on their fake stories.

Wow, does that ever reek of bogusness. How exactly did this unlocking happen? Did the person have to mail his phone to AT&T to have them flash an unlocked baseband on it?

It's definitely fake. The unlocking didn't happen.

Has a better deal or your travelling and wanna buy a prepay sim in another country!
It's uncertain AT&T will adopt such a thing yet of unlocking a iPhone
Apparently However they do unlock other of there handsets tied to there network so you Aren't really that stuck but outta luck for using ur iPhone it's Prob better btw
Cos Do AT&T provide international insurance plan for travelling? U loose ur phone abroad it's stolen then what?
Your crying right
Btw AT&T if they go ahead with this unlocking there hardly going to
Supply foreigners outside the USA the unlocking privilege !!!
the British networks only lock the iPhone after a 3 month basis and u have to be in the UK and having used the sim card
Not outside it

Sorry, but i refuse to believe that a big company like AT&T will not unlock Iphones in the end of contract.
Why such a big company need chains to unlock customers?marketing control? dont wanna competition? sorry, WE ARE IN 2012.
I'm in Brazil now working, buy my iphone in US, contract is over and my IPHONE 4 is LOCKED. Cannot do nothing with it because AT&T think that is the right thing to do: lock humans at this poor sad company. The Worst type of unsuccessful image in business is doing what you guys do.
i work with communications and every single person that i talk in US about cellphones is to stay away from AT&T.
shame on you, AT&T!
Congratulations, half world hates you.
