I pay for my AT&T bill with a debit card, I paid for my IPhone 3G and 3GS with a debit card, and paid for my IPad with a debit card.
What's the deal? Why can't I pay in full for the IPhone 4 and reserve it that way? You'll immediately get your money and all I will have to do is wait?
This is a raw deal...some people choose not to have credit cards because they make enough money not to have to charge anything and don't want to be in debt.

I do agree with you. its a raw deal and why I will pre-order but through Apple. As far as I know and have found out so far Apple is not placing that same kind of restriction on pre-orders.

Ah, so we can do the pre-order through Apple at the same prices for the upgrades? Do we have to physically go to the Apple store or can we do it online?

I went to the Apple Store yesterday and was told that it can be done online. You specify which store you want to pick it up at according to the clerk.

With Apple you have a few options you can pre-order in store or online, You can have it shipped to store or shipped to your home. If you ship it to your home the phone will already come activated. Or you can reserve a phone for pickup at your local store and pay for it when you arrive.

Couple things here. If you pre-order from apple.com and choose to have the iPhone shipped to you it will be shipped via UPS or FedEX, either way, you have to sign for the package, it will not be left at the door.
The iPhone must be activated thru iTunes on your computer.

So are you with AT&T just for the iPhone?
Service should be the reason you stay with a company, not the phone.

This couldn't be because you're not eligible for an upgrade and you're taking your anger out on AT&T now could it?

So, you can't use your debit card as a CREDIT card? Well, that blows!
I guess I'll have to order through apple.com instead of AT&T. Thanks for the info yall.

The iPhone if bought through Apple will already come activated. You will just need to set the phone up through iTunes. But the activation process will already be completed. And yes if its being shipped to your home you will need to sign for it as it wont just be left there. Should also note that when going to pickup at a Apple store even if you are a Authorized User the account holder must still be present.

Cool...all I'll have to do is pop the SIM out of my 3GS and pop it into the IPhone 4.
Woot!

I am thinking that AT&T's definition of a Debit card is more in line with an ATM card and not an actual VISA Check/Debit Card. Thats just my opinion, but I cant imagine they wouldnt let people with a VISA or Mastercard endorsed Debit Card preorder the new iPhone.
Guess I will find out in about 6 days...lol

I dont think that is true. Doesnt the iPhone 4 use a MicroSIM? Seems that no matter how you order it, you would have to get a new SIM card before you could use the phone.
I am goign to have it shipped to my work, but I fully anticipate having to run by AT&T at lunch to get a new MicroSIM

No. The iPhone 4 uses a micro sim which it will already have in it. Although you can use your current sim if you got steady hands and a good knife to cut the sim down to micro-sim size.

So just hook to iTunes, restore/backup from existing iPhone and you are good to go? Does my current SIM get "deactivated" at that time?

Yes. Your old SIM will stop working and the MicroSIM will have your current phone number after that.

From past experieince with Apple preorders and speak ing to APple reps lately. Yes just hook to iTunes and restore/backup from existing iPhone and you are good to go. And in the past the previous iphone is immediatly deactivated.

A debit card does not allow a pre-auth, then charge at time of shipping type of transaction.
If you dont want a credit card....get an AMEX card which will work and is not really a "Credit" card since you must pay in full monthly.

It does blow but thats at&t. Went by the company store in my home town and was told the same thing.
Anyway they said come by on the 15th they would run the card but the charges would not show up until
phone was picked up at the outlet. They even waved all upgrade charges 18.00! big deal.
On the 24th first come first served. But it does seem this roll out is smoother than the rest.

um no, you are not 'screwed' as you eloquently put it.
Reserve the phone you wish, then use the debit card to purchase the phone in store.
Problem solved. ![]()

I don't have a credit card and was surprised to hear this so I called AT&T and the csr said I should be ok to pay with a debit card. Where did you find the info saying you can't?

When will my credit card be charged if I preorder?
At the point your order is placed, we will authorize the funds to cover your purchase. However, your
credit card will not be charged until the order is shipped. Remember to use a credit card as debit cards
cannot be used to preorder.

My Visa branded debit card does and i have used it for many pre-orders that put a pre-authorization on the card then charge when item ships.

debit cards do not guarantee that the money will be in the account on the 24th.
debit cards are worth a little more than a check. you could have 250 one day
on your debit card but on the next day have 100. debit cards are only as good
as the money in the bank and most banks don't offer over the limit amounts.
