If I'm understanding correctly, there's no new hardware. Since this is something new, I'm not sure what to do. Should I purchase the iphone 4? Or do I keep my 3gs?

Online Apps: many of iCloud’s features have roots in MobileMe, such as online Contacts and Mail Apps, which have been written from scratch, since according to Jobs, they the company has "learned a lot" since it built MobileMe.
Heavily Enhanced Syncing: back in the MobileMe days, syncing was merely limited to e-mail and contacts. With iCloud, important files, such as documents and pictures, can be synced across different devices. In addition, iWork users will be able to edit documents over this service and see the changes in real time, even between a Mac and an iPad, for example. That’s unheard of on other Office suites. The same happens with photos, which can be streamed to any device on the fly. Similarly to what happened before, information that’s added or modified on one device will be immediately pushed down to the remaining devices.
Backup: iCloud will allow data such as settings, books, pictures, video and even Apps to be backed up and show up across all your devices. That will eliminate the need for huge set ups during system reinstalls, for example.
iTunes in Cloud (Your Music Locker): this service allows any newly purchased content, such as songs, Apps or iBooks, to be automatically synced over the air to up to 10 devices. For already purchased content, users will have the option to download each song, App or book individually.

Currently, the iPhone 4 is the current iPhone. It's available at $199 for the 16GB black or white model and at $299 for the 32GB black or white model on both AT&T and Verizon in the United States. It's been available since June 2010 through AT&T, and February 2011 through Verizon. A revamped version of Apple's 2009 iPhone 3GS is available exclusively in black and at an 8GB capacity exclusively through AT&T for $49. Also available since June 2010. Generally, Apple has announced a new version of it's iPhone during every WWDC event, however, this year was the exception. Rumors suggest that a new iPhone will be announced around August or September. Because of this, for one of the very first times in history, Apple has disappointed me.

I am not looking for the next iphone until January 2012. Why?
About 4 months ago my 2 lines with iphones had their upgrade dates moved up to June 2011.Well 1 moved up anyways more on that later. When rumors started that no iPhone would be announced at WWDC and WWDC was announced I logged in to check my upgrade dates (ATT has a history of upgrading eligibilty dates to mark the launch of a new iPhone). But anyways I noticed the upgrade date has been pushed back to 9/6/2011? Recognize that date of 9/6? It was the hidden date in the WWDC invitation. Now after WWDC the upgrade dates have been pushed back again to 1/10/2012. Now another thing I find odd in this is both lines are being pushed back but only 1 line should technically be pushed back. I used my line for the 3GS upgrade in June of 2009 which June of 2011 would have marked the end of my 24 month contract. Instead it is being pushed back to the exact same dates as the other iphone. Line 2 was used to upgrade my 3GS to the iPhone 4 in June of 2010 so even if they gave me a 18 month upgrade that would have put the date in Dec. 2011 not Jan 2012.
Now some may say well its just a coincendence or something else. There are 4 lines total on my account 2 lines with iphones and 2 lines with Androids. The 2 lines with android their dates are unchanged. Android on line 3 was upgraded in Sept of 2009 contract ends and full upgrade eligibilty starts in sept of 2011. Droid on line 4 was upgraded in Feb of 2010 and becomes FUE and contract free in Feb of 2012.

Here is what I am thinking, the WWDC that we just watched yesterday will focus on Software in the future. Later this summer when apple has it's annual event to discuss the new iPods, they will now roll the iPhones into that presentation. It puts the release into the Holiday season. This is my personal opinion. I also think that the iPhone 5 running iOS 5 will come out at the same time. I also think that the iPhone 5 will be more like the 3Gs was to the 3G and that the next iPhone after this will have LTE.
If you 3GS is still working for you. I would wait for a new announcement of hardware; it is coming in the next few months. And unless you pocket book is burning, I would wait for that LTE version. Rumors on that are an early 2012 release????
Apple is definitely mixing up their release schedules on us.
For reference to others who are confused by the naming conventions; iOS 5 is the next generation of the operating system this is not to be confused with references to the iPhone 5. Since we do not know what Apple will call it, it is the best that we have for reference purposes. For all we know the next model will the the iPhone 4S?

Could the delay have anything to do with the earthquage/tsunami in Japan? Doesn't the screen come from there?
