Before we upgraded to the new iOS version, our normal Data usage monthly was well below our 2GB Data Plan. Now with the iOS 6.0 update, we are being charged for Triple Overage Charges, so far today we have used 6GB of Data and haven't changed our Data habits like before the update. I have contact Apple about the problem and they are aware of the problem and are working on it. We need a fix or leave AT&T.

I upgraded to IOS 6. Within a day, I received a warning that I had exceeded my data allowance by 50 MB. Checking my settings I discovered that, somehow, my wi-fi settings had been altered and the phone was set as not to connect automatically to known networks, and have been using the 4G network without me noticing until it was too late. Is this a common occurrence? Check your settings after you upgrade!

What that setting does, is to stop asking you to join a network you haven't joined before. If you have it off, you have to go into the WiFi setting to see the list of available networks instead of having them popup on the screen when you try to use a function like Safari that can operate over WiFi.
I know it will automatically connect to networks that I've joined before because the phone reconnected to my home WiFi network, and automatically joined the network at a restaurant I've been to before, all with that setting OFF.

Under Settings > General > Cellular look for Wi-Fi Plus Cellular. Turn it off. I think it's only on the 4S and 5.

I expected the seetings to remain the same, that is, join automatically,, but it did not happen. When I authorized the "ask to join networks", I as presented with the option of joining known networks automatically or not, which I immediately authorized. But it was the too late. The data had been used. I'm talking about a $s Iphone.

IIRC - That feature was removed from the the final iOS 6 and thus not factor. It was being tested in the beta releases but did not make it into the final iOS,

I also am having excessive data usage issues. Normally using around half of my 2Gb allowance. It'st currently approaching 3 gb and that after just 4 days on this billing cycle.
I have my iTunes set for no cellular data including for iTunes match. After updating to iOS 6, my iTunes Match was off and in turning it on, all my music was deleted off my iPhone. So, to listen, I need to download from iCloud. Remember, cellular data is turned off. while on wifi, I started downloading about 10 albums. After about 20 minutes, my cellular use had increased over 180 mb. Again, remember I'm on wifi and my music is set for no cellular data use. I completely turned off cellular to finish downloading the selected album. That worked, but not an exceptable solution.
Clearly iOS 6 is using data from cellular even when wifi is available. This is an APPLE issue. I guess when they removed wifi-plus, they left it turned on.
I think it's time for iOS 6.0.1. ASAP!!!!!!!!!!

Over 3.2 gb of data in 2 days.
Usual amount since 1st gen Iphone is 200-300 mb a month.
On a WIFI about 99%
Apple had me restore phone so we will see...
ATT saying they will take care of overage charges since they agreed something broke...
AND this is why I usually don't buy a new design or OS on release --- I'm a Beta tester I guess that paid for the job.... SIGH

same issue. Iphone 4 upgraded to IOS6 recently. Have never used above the pitiful 200MB plan and allof a sudden went over the limit once (overnight). i caught it in time and turned off my cellular data, but only just barely before it nearly went over again ![]()
Trying to work it out with AT&T but thus far they're blaming it on apple and not willing to work with me. all they recommended was to get a free data monitor app.....which does NOTHING to solve the root cause.

Calling AT&T = Denial.
"Oh this is the first we've heard of this"
Smells like what they did to me before with that stupid signal booster that DOES NOT WORK WITH THE iPHONE, but they didn't tell you that and continue to sell those worthless peices of plastic.
This is posted all over the web and all over here in their own forums. You are asked when registering to give your cell number so they can get feedback from it and help you. And so how can you possibly claim that "this is the first we've heard of this?" Seriously, this game is getting old AT&T.
Same problem here, checked my settings after reading this and sure enough, JOIN NETWORKS was off. I'm a bit puzzled however, because I automatically jumped on known networks at McDonald's last night, and of course, when I walk through the door, I'm on my own network. Makes no sense, I've always used near my 5 GB I pay for and rarely ever go over, however, now I'm into 7GB since I upgraded to this OS? THIS is APPLE'S FAULT.
Sigh - let the baseballing begin, back and for between AT&T and Apple.....Verizon is already on this and sent an update, this is NOT specific to the 5, much as the gal on the phone at Apple would like to have me believe. This is the OS and nothing more. And so, we line the pockets of our carriers until someone decides to take responsibility.
Seriously thinking about moving to Android, specially after the MAPS debacle.

AT&T wasn't very helpful. I did ask them to reset my data plan so it would not be throttled and they refused claiming they did not have that ability. Next question was a $30 refund for the data plan fee, and that was quickly granted.

Again, JOIN NETWORKS being off does NOT prevent your phone from joining known networks that you've set up to automatically connect to. The phone will do that no matter whether that setting is ON or OFF. All that setting does is enable/disable that popup that shows available NEW networks that you can join. If you turn it OFF, and you go into an area where there are new networks that you haven't joined, you simply won't get the popup. You'll have to go to the WiFi settings menu to see the list of new networks.
Don't believe it? Look at what it says under the setting. BOTH on and off say that "known networks will be joined automatically". That's why you still connect to McDonalds and your home WiFi even with it off.

Actually it appears to be specifc to the Iphone 5, I carry a verizon Iphone 4S that is updated to IOS6 and that there is no update available from them for it and my data usage is normal. The update from verizon had to do with the verizon specific firmware nothing to do with Apple - they do that a lot, especially on the android world phones, have some droid X internationals that we have done verizon specific firmware upgrades about 10 times since thyey where put into service

Yeah, I get it, it's Apple's fault. So put the pressure on them to get it fixed and offer adjustments and stop with the denials and excuses and "speculation."
I've had it with this company. Seriously, you could care less about your customers and the already tight pockets we have in this economy. Passing the buck is the name of the game here so far - open your wallets or turn off cellular data altogether and still pay.

Iphone 3gs, Iphone 4, Iphone 4S all on IOS 6, no excessive data use here. Can only go with what I see on the usage statistics of the phone. Checked a few of my people that have the Iphone 4 and 4S as corporate issued and nothing out of the ordinary to be seen. What I have seen oin the net always references the 5 and ios 6.
Are you using Icloud? If so, it could be using your cellular connection to back up data. To check this: Setting -> Icloud->Documents and Data. Be sure that use cellular is off. Icloud is a corporate nono here on corporation supplied phones, it is completely turned off
Have no Iphone 5's, and probably will not authorize them for company use. In the process of discontinuing Iphones for corporate use all together through attrition, when we upgrade the people they have to choose a different phone.
On thing to note - if you are not on mobile share data plans, facetime does not work on cellular with att.

Well, this certainly does speak to the knowledge of the supervisor on the phone when he suggests I'm probably using facetime to run up my data plan when I'm calling to complain about my second chunk of 1gb overages and I'm clearly NOT on a 10 gb data share plan.

out of curiousity I recent the usage statistics on both my Iphone 4S and the 3GS, right after I responded to you the 4S is a verizon phone and the 3GS is a ATT phone. I am rarely out of wifi connectivity for the phones, last reset about 24 hours ago for both devices

Even without having a iphone 5 to add to the mix as a staticstical sample, it iappears the the issue is not on the older phones running IOS 6. None of the social site software, pandora or any streaming / auto update applications are runnig outside of a connection to my exchange servers at the office and at home

I will say this. Prior to the recent changes in iOS, my largest data usage in one month was 1.1 or 1.2GB, and that was because I spent an afternoon watching Netfix over 3G on my iPhone 4 one day while waiting on my wife who was at a seminar. With the more recent iOS changes, (specifically the separation of podcasts from "music") I had a month where I actually hit 1.2GB only 2.5 weeks into my new billing cycle. I quickly changed the settings for teh PodCasts app to not automatically download (the option to turn off using cellular data wasn't avaialable until iOS 6), and my data usage returned to "normal"...

Actually, I would be tempted to return the iPhone and repurchase after this problem is resolved. If Apple doesn't fix this quickly, at&t might start actually billing for the data overages. That could make for a very expensive phone.
It would also light a fire under Apple.

They are way too busy denying it and blaming Apple. I got told yesterday by a supervisor at AT&T that he "speculates" that I was using facetme on 4g. He believes I ran my own plan up facetiming strangers overnight while I'm sleeping, at home on my own network whilst not being on a shared data plan. This is sickening, and if it is not fixed in the next few days and I have to continue turning my cellular data off all the time, Verizon, here we come with our $250 per month family account. AT&T has already screwed me over once and they are not going to get a chance to do it again with more blame games and denial.
not see it at all on a 4s or a 3GS that have ios 6 installed.
reset the 3GS on OCt 3, 2012 at 6:01 AM, as of right now the usage statistic is
Sent - 17.0KB
Recieved 93.0 KB
reset the 4S at )ct 2, 2012 at 7:48 AM
sent 449KB
Recieved 1.9MB
the 4S is tied to my exchange server fo email, and the 3GS is tied to a normal internet email account, that is the only difference
Dont worry about running to verizon or sprint, they are getting the exact same posts on excessive cellular data use, so it is the IOS and not the carrier

Perhaps so, but that doesn't exonerate whoever that AT&T person was who told the person that the excessive data usage may have been due to the person using Facetime; if he had even half a brain he would have realized that such a explanation would be ludicrous at best had he checked the user's account and saw that he wasn't on one of the new Mobile Share plans--and this is (allegedly) an AT&T supervisor, of all people, who had offered up that explanation. It's amazing as to the amount of FUD spewed out by (some) AT&T CSRs...and yet even with all that misinformation being handed out to customers, it's still the customer who must be at fault for whatever issues he's complaining about.

2 quick suggestions I found when I updated my and my fathers Iphones.
1. When I updated his 3gs (My 4 was okay but it could have been a problem for others) it would not fully connect to wifi. It faked it by flashing the wifi signal only long enough to make it appear to have worked and then it would go away the next time I woke up the phone. When trying to connect again through settings it would say the password was wrong (No way) I would re-enter the password and it would say it was okay but fake it again. I had to restart the phone and try again a few times and then finally it worked. So make sure that the wifi is working.
2. Automatic downloads and uploading: The new os is full of automatic downloading and uploading features. From the cloud to automatic downloads for itunes and podcasts, papers and magazines there is a lot there. It is impartaive that you go through these settings and check them out. Especially with the app store. I have more then 275 apps installed on my phone. Every day since ios6 was released i have at at least 6 updates to make it iphone5 compatible. The map app also seems to track movement when closed much more then google did. Be sure to completely close this app promptly when not useing it!
