iPhone 3G AIM & Text messaging [ Edited ]

I am new to AT&T I have the iPhone 3G, and I downloaded the AOL AIM App form the App Stoe.  Do they count as "text messages"?  I have the 200 text messaging plan and I've used 122 of my 200 so far and I just dont think I've sent 122 Text messages.  I was on AIM  that I downloaded and Just want to know if they take from your Text message allowance?

I hope not that would stink. I dont think it should but I would appreciate the help.

 I believe thats outgoing AND incoming.

I believed SMS counts when you send or receive a text message... As for AIM app, I read that it uses data not SMS engine but I could've been wrong.

I havent gotten a straight answer yet does anyone know if I use AOL AIM App does it use the internet or does it take away from the Text Messaging?

Use it and check your account (they take 24 hours to update) its under the data tab

You actually log into the AIM network while using the AIM application. It uses your data plan and does not count against your text messaging plan.

Yeah, this is probably one of the things that I need to clarify when I get my iPhone.

So, I can use the AIM application from iTunes with the $30 data plan without any extra charges (such as SMS)?

I'll still get the $5 texting plan for normal texting only though.

The reason I ask this is that I never seem to find a straight answer when it comes to this.

Yes. You will not be charged for SMS while using the AIM application.

I just contacted At&T about this and YES, aim DOES charge you a text messaging fee for incoming and outgoing messages.

If you're NOT using an iPhone, then it counts as SMS. The preinstalled IM app ("Oz" ) on NON-iPhones use SMS for IM'ing.

However, if you use the AIM app from the iPhone app store, THAT AIM uses data, not SMS.

Did you specifically ask her about the iPhone AIM app? or simply "Does the AIM app use SMS or data?"

This is a small but important distinction.

The iPhone AIM app was created specifically for iPhone to use DATA.

Other phones (including my Tilt and BJ) are not so lucky. The preinstalled IM app uses SMS. We have to get a 3rd party app in order to use data to IM.

Did she lie to you on purpose? No. Did she lie to you because she was misinformed or uninformed or didn't pay attention to her training or wasn't properly trained at all? Yes, very likely.

I asked specifically for the Iphone, and in the app store if you read under license agreement it specifically says data and messaging charges may apply. I haven't used text messaging in over 2 weeks but my att account messaging details shows all the phone numbers i sent IMs to using the AIM client over those two weeks.

Maybe it only uses sms if you IM a phone number and not a screeen name

Interesting...That could be it.

That would stink. But I shouldn't be surprised. AT&T probably had their hand in the SMS side of things.

Sorry if passed along bad info.

I remember other users saying the AIM app using data and I was ticked because AT&T doesn't offer IM apps for PDAs to use data. I had to get a 3rd party app to do that.
