I am having the same issue and it is not related to a specific area... I could be at home, in my car or work, it will go from LTE to 4G, to No service.
I am not sure if there is a fix yet.

I am seeing it too but our area does not have LTE yet but I know they are working on the network here to bring LTE online. It may be related?

I have had similar issues. In my area, we do not have LTE yet but often I am on 4G with my iPhone 5 and go into work (where my bars used to drop to 1 or 2 on iPhone 4 (3G)). I would fully expect my new phone to get at least similar service. Fairly quickly my iPhone 5 switches over to the edge network or no service and will not go back on its own. It seems like my phone does not go back to 4G once it leaves that network (without restarting the phone) I tested this theory in the parking lot at work. I normally have 4-5 bars on 4G anywhere in the parking lot so I went out there for lunch one day and watched to see if it would switch back from the edge network to the 4G network. Then after 25 minutes of waiting, it still had not switched so.... I powered the phone off and back on..... poof ... it was on 4G with full bars. I have gone to AT&T and they switched out my sim card, also I have tried resetting my network settings in the iPhone settings app. Also, I have restored my phone to factory default twice, the first time I restored from a back up and the second time I told it to setup a new phone and not restore from back up.
Is this a hardware issue? It really seems like something Apple could fix via software.

I'm having this same problem in Tucson AZ. I barely ever have a signal at home or work. It's really a nightmare. I've already had AT&T replace my SIM card and then Apple replaced my iPhone 5, but to no avail. I'm about to lose hope.

Having the same issue. My wife and I both have the iphone 5. we can be sitting across from one another at a restaurant and she will be on 4G and mine will be on E(dge), both having the same settings. This morning in my office i was on E so i went to a window, powered my phone off and back on, then went in and re-enabled LTE and now it is on 4G. Also need to figure out what is eating my battery life. I switched my email accounts to manual so hopefully that will slow down the drain rate.

I was hoping the iOS 6.0.1 update would fix this. I just had it happen to me again. What can I do? This is getting sad.

I am having the same issue on my iphone 5. It happens in differnet locations and certain areas of those places. I have to walk and stand in another place for it to work. My dads 3g flip phone will work flawlessly while mine won't work.

I get them same issue in my town. It comes down to how large the town is, and if it was one of the systems bought out by ATT, or just not enough network coverage, due to local cities and vilage authorities not allowing ATT to put up towers, micro or Pico sites to help fill in the dead zones.
"Ren: Now listen, Cadet. I've got a job for you. See this button? Don't touch it! It's the History Eraser button, you fool!
Stimpy: So what'll happen?
Ren: That's just it. We don't know. Maybe something bad, maybe something good. I guess we'll never know, 'cause you're going to guard it. You won't touch it, will you?"

It switches from full bars ( AT&T) and 4G to 'No service' and stays on 'no service' for about 10-20 seconds then it switches back to full bars/4G.
I have complained to both AT&T and apple and have:
- restarted iPhone and set it up again
- changed network settings
- replaced SIM card and then again did above 2 steps.
- exchange my new iPhone 5 at apple store for another iPhone 5 ( assuming my first one was defective)
The 'no service' issue still persists and since then I've had to again.
Reset all settings and network settings.
Again AT&T are saying that maybe my replacement iphone5 is also defective.
I get these 'no service' status at LEAST once every hour!!! Frustrating but I am waiting for them to fix it!!!
I got the 'no service' status while writing this review too!!!
I live in Morris county, NJ

Another problem could be the SIM cards. You might want to ask AT&T at the store to check your phone codes or if needed to trade out the SIM.
