I know there isn't a precedent in the mobile world, but with all this rancor about upgrade pricing structures what if AT&T and Apple allowed you to lease your iPhone for a year? That way iPhone owners who feel they must have the latest evolution will never own their phones and can upgrade as soon as their lease is up. AT&T and Apple would then resell or lease the refurbished unit to a new customer and the established customer would have the newest iPhone. The companies would be out less for manufacturing new units, new customers would be enticed to join with the option of having a lower-priced refurbished device, and the "gotta-have-it-now" customers would have their latest and greatest iPhones. Everybody wins.
I think you would pay a lot for insurance for a phone lease. Chances of dropping, scratching, dinging are high. Then Apple has to refurbish the phone in order to lease it again. After a 1 year lease, the phone is old news to Apple. I don;t think a lease would work for them.
Besides, look at all the traffic and interest Apple gets with every release!

That's what security deposits are for. Anyway, the lease option would attract even more customers who fall somewhere in between no-committment and upgrade-hungry.
