Since they have already unlocked one of my off contract iPhones, there's no reason not to believe this article.
No more whining about people posting unlock questions.

A simple search of the forums using the work "unlock" reveals over 2000 posts. http://forums.wireless.att.com/t5/forums/searchpag
All of which state that AT&T will not under any circumstance unlock an iPhone.
This is not news, it is widely known and has been since the iPhone was introduced.

again not going to benefit the majority of people looking for a unlock
"Beginning Sunday, April 8, we will offer qualifying customers the ability to unlock their AT&T iPhones. The only requirements are that a customer's account must be in good standing, their device cannot be associated with a current and active term commitment on an AT&T customer account, and they need to have fulfilled their contract term, upgraded under one of our upgrade policies or paid an early termination fee."
Not going to help those that purchase the phone off of fleabay or craiglist

My question, for those familiar with iTunes unlocking, do you have to have a foreign SIM card in the iPhone to initiate the unlock process?

How do you know this? Do you have some secret insight to the number of ebay vs. AT&T sourced phones owned by people asking for an unlock?
Of course, there are a lot of AT&T phones out there that were sold on e-bay after contract expiration, however for the iPhone 4 unless the owner paid the ETF, none of them are off contract yet.
What will be interesting is how AT&T defines a contract in "good standing". What if there was a missed payment, what if the person suspended service for xx months, what if, what if.
I will submit my still on contract phones for unlocking the moment they qualify.

That's a great question. I ulocked a 3G through AT&T last week under this new program. Some people on this forum didn't believe me whan I posted that experience ![]()
I did have an active foreign sim in the phone. When the iTunes update finished up popped a message in ITunes that the phone was unlocked and it found AT&T, the foreign carrier's roaming partner. It also found T-mobile and switched to T-Mob when the AT&T signal was weak.
Don't know what would have happened if I didn't have the foreign sim installed. I'm assuming" the unlock would have worked anyway as an AT&T sim would have activated the phone.

One of the reasons that wingrider says that it won't help most of the (one-time) posters on this board is that most of them are not AT&T customers. One of the requirements is an account in good standing.
There are plenty of iPhones 4 that will qualify. I have already upgraded to a different device. For the early adopters of iPhones 4, the 20-month upgrade time has already come and gone.

Between about July 1st and Dec 31st millions on iPhone 4 handsets will drop off the 2 year contract.
AT&T risked losing those customers with an unlock issue to the competition.
Even AT&T was not foolish enough to risk watching customers jump ship for an unlock friendly competitor..
It didn't happen with the iPhone 3 and 3GS because AT&T still had the exclusive.
As soon as Sprint and Verizon got the iPhone AT&T's unlock policy had to change.

Thank goodness, now we don't have to keep repeating the "you can't" thing over and over.
Of course, that's gonna cut about 50% of the traffic out of the forum. If they switch back to unlimited data, that will cut the other 50% of traffic. I can dream ![]()

Oh man... that's not great news. So we will still have endless unlock questions with no answer possible, still.
Ah well, at least current customers will be able to unlock devices at the end of their term, or when they upgrade to the next one.

The device unlock code cannot be released if there is a past due balance on an active account or an unpaid balance/ETF on a cancelled account.
Bring the account current so that you can proceed
Customer makes a payment that brings the account current then ATT can proceed w/ the request.

If I read it right, it's just for people who are US AT&T customers and have an account in good standing. Not just anyone who wants an iPhone that they bought second hand to be unlocked.

I think we need to wait for the exact date as per ATT information is not gonna be updated until the 8th. So that we can check if phone bought from craiglist or ebay can be unlock.

As I understand it, from the 8th of april iphones can be unlocked which are out of contract with AT&T. I bought a AT&T phone on ebay which was still in the box and plastic. However, I am in the UK. Is there anyway I can get this unlocked?

don't know. What I have seen is it is for customers who have fullfilled their contract and their account is in good standing. You will need to contact ATT directly as this is a customer forum.
For service or support questions including existing order status, call:
Customer Support: 1-800-331-0500
http://www.att.com/econtactus/callUs.jsp?serviceGr
I would not be surprised if they do not help you as you are not a customer of their nor have you been.

I'd be surprised if they did it for people who were never with AT&T and aren't planning to ever use them because they are overseas.

Maybe becasue the press release has the terms of unlock that SPECIFICLY states this, or did you not read the restrictions. No account no unlock - period. Unless the phone is unlocked prior to being put on fleabay or cragslist the person that purchases it cannot call att and say "You pwease unlock my iphone" the answer will still be the same - No way. As far as a "contrct in good standing" that is already been discusses, especially for upgrade eligibility - missed payments, late payments equate a moved upgrade date. I define a "account in good standing" as one that ha paid on time for the duration of their contract woth us, not sure how you would consider it. The thousands of current att iphones (some brand new in box never been activated) that are on fleabay and craigslist, the ones that that where purchased playing the international currency game prior to 04/08 are not going to be unlocked according to the att upper manangemt statments that was made.
So you are going to submit your "currently on contract phones" after they are no longer associated with a active term commitment?

why there is already a quote from att upper ecelon on what the restrictions are going to be, it basicly states that if the phone is currently on fleabay or has been purchased from fleabay prior to Apr 08 it will not be unlocked unless the person that origianlly owned it on their account still has a active att account and calls in to get it unlocked

To unlock an iPhone in the Uk the IMEI number must appear on a network in the UK as being active.
It is the network that the IMEI is on that asks Apple to unlock the phone, so if the IMEI is not on any UK network it cannot be officially unlocked.

In the UK, and I assume it will be similar for the USA, to unlock through iTunes a sim card that is from a network which is different to that to which the phone was locked to has be be inserted and then synced to iTunes to complete the unlock process.

For a guy who always throws the TOS at people, when it's convenient, all of a sudden you're putting stock in what some AT&T executive may have said. Is it in writing from AT&T?
I thought you were the guy who had to see it in writing, from AT&T, before you would believe anything.
For example, if a customer missed a payment due to job loss, but caught up, is that deemed an account in good standing?
Weren't you the guy who, last week, said there will be no AT&T unlocks in the foreseeable future? Didn't you write that?
