Do you mean what can you do with an unlocked device? With an unlocked device, you can use the device with a different carrier such as T-Mobile in the US or UK or any provider that uses SIM cards. However, keep in mind that you will most likely see 2G speeds with other carriers the device is used on.

I would like to know a little more about unlocking my iphone.
Iphone was purchased by me in the Apple retail store San Francisco in December 2010for the full cost. Ie when I bought it, I told the seller that I wanted to buy it without a contract,because I thought that without a contract, it will not be tied to one operator, and I will be able to travel with him.
Can I assume that I have not got a contract with ATT?
If the iphone was bought at full price without a contract for 2 years, then if I can unlock it now?

Vity-ok and others asking a similar question, it doesn't look possible for anyone to unlock it who didn't at some point have the phone on contract with AT&T. I put my success story in yesterday earlier in this thread, and I haven't had an "active" account with AT&T since early 2010 when I left the US, but I did have an account back then and they absolutely had to look that account up in order to do this procedure.

So at least in my case, I was able to do it for an account that's been closed for 2 years since I paid the ETF back then. But there doesn't seem to be any way that they'll unlock a random phone from someone who never had an account on that phone. If this continues to be true, you'll have to try to find the original owner to get them to call AT&T to unlock it, or go the jailbreak route.

I live in Russia and my friend sent me his old iphone 3gs 32gb.
which he used with AT & T boolee two years and told me that on April 8, I can turn to help the operator AT & T and unlock this unit to work around the world.

He said that the need to appeal to the live chat but they need a U.S. number and zip code. They are not mine, could be someone able to check my phone to be unlocked if it is free?

History : iPhone 4 bought for full price in June 2011. Had ATT service for 40 days before canceling the service on leaving the country.

Call to International Care : Not aware of policy

Chat with Internation Care : 2 different agents not aware of policy. Got the same response "We have read and are aware of the articles online stating AT&T will begin unlocking iPhones that are no longer under contract as of today. Unfortunately, at this time, AT&T has not released an official statement informing us of the validity of the reports or how we will go about unlocking the iPhones"

Waited for 7am ET to talk to agent in US call center.

15 minute call, most of the time is spend by the agent filling out the case form.

Information required : AT&T wireless number to identify account, last 4 digits of SSN for verification, IMEI number

They will forward the request to Apple and give you a case number. ETA 16 April.

Now waiting for the email from Apple.

I do not know how to initiate a chat with AT&T tech support, since I do not have an AT&T telephone number.  I called the 800-331-0500 number and got a most unhelpful "Bob" who was pretty sure that the only way any iphone can be unlocked on AT&T is to purchase it unlocked at the store.  He kept repeating the same thing a couple of times.

I had purchased my no contract at the store and it is still locked.  Any help is appreciated.  Perhaps I should try again and hope to get to someone else.

I just called AT&T support and they gave me unlock code and took my phone number to call back in 24 hours. Said its gonna be unlocked. So its possible to unlock it without AT&T account...
