have not seen any official statement on why from ATT, all you will get here is speculation, this is a peer to peer forum

I too had bought the iphone 4 from best buy, i called at&t and they unlocked it for me, the method is very simple call at&t, answer the reps questions and note down the case number, and wait for the email within the specified time, if you do not get an email, call them again use the case number to remind them.

simple yes, 100 percent success rate - no, if the phone does not meet the posted requirements it will not be unlocked until it does. So no one should expect that the iphone that theyare trying to get unlocked will actually be unlocked until they recieve the email verifying it or telling them that it will not be. Don;t copunt on the specified time either, it is an estimation of when you will recieve it, not a set in stone time period

Did my request on April 9. Today I got the email from AT&T with instructions do complete the unlock.

no one can help you in the forum other then to tell you have to start the ticket, it starts with a phone call to support

call 1-800-331-0500 and then dial 0010 to immediately speak to a representative and skip the hold time (International users dial 1-800-335-4685)

So, I filed for an Unlock Code on April 19th, and still have not received my Email. So I decided the other day to contact ATT and see what’s up, they said wait a few more days at it takes about 5-10 business days to receive your Email, they told me the LATEST would be May 1st. They said if I did not get it by Friday, call them again. So still nothing, so I called them today and said still no Email, and the man took my Case Number to check into it for me. He told me it is still being processed and just have to wait for the email. But the interesting thing he told me was that ATT is backlogged with over 20 million unlocking requests, so he said I might not even receive my email until the End of May, and told me too keep looking out for it. He said If I don’t receive it by the end of May to call again. Uhhg the time delay is so long well over a month, I hope it doesn’t take that long, it has already been over a week since i filled for my unlock code, so I can only hope and pray it comes sooner than later.

I look at this anther way, up until a few weeks ago, it has not even been an option. This backlog sound just like the order backlog when a new model come out.

Yeah true, they said that they dont have enough people in the Unlocking Dept, to handle all the requests and are Hiring more to help speede up the process, so the key is, just Be Patience I guess it will come eventually.

another thing to remember - when 72 hours is stated, it is not clock hours but business hours @ 8 hours a day or 9 days

im in Germany and need my Iphone unlocked.. Ive found out over a blog that should be possible via the Att Chat. But im not a US Citizen and located in Germany. So i cant start a Chat with the Att Support Team...

Is there a nother way?

i am in kind of a bind . i got an iphone 4 from my aunt in the usa  i live in suriname .

she had the iphone on at&t i believe but its locked for the sim i wanna use in it .

what is the wat to LEGALLY get my iphone unlocked . 

i cant call custumer care because  it will cost alot  to do so from my country .

any advice will be apreciated dearly

Call using Skype. A call is your only way to start the process if your iPhone is eligible.

Mine took 17 days to be unlocked. 

Did my request on april 9 and only got the email yesterday.

I hope yours don't take so much time...

I am from Australia and I recently bought an Iphone 4 off ebay, which is currently locked to AT&T. I have tried various unlocking methods, to no avail, and because I am not (nor have I ever been) an AT&T customer, I cannot get access to online chat with AT&T customer service. I have the IMEI number for my phone, but no AT&T account number or phone number. So my question is, how can I contact AT&T and request an unlock for my Iphone?

Call them during their business hours.  The number is below and you can use Skype to keep your costs down.  Do not be surprised if they cannot help you as there is some discussion that you must be or must have been an ATT customer with that iPhone?  Not sure how true this is.

Hi..

I am from India, I have a at&t locked iPhone 3GS, i called the at&t customer care number on 17th April 2012 and made a request for unlocking my iPhone, they took my IMEI code and told to wait for the unlocking instructions on email.

They said expected date of resolution as 25 April 2012, but i still have not received the mail.

Also i tried calling them back asking for the status on the case, they said its still in process and would take more time, but didnt give any date this time.

Hope i get it unlocked soon.

Also i need to know if the at&t SIM is required to unlock the phone (i dont have it) once i get the email from AT&T?
