AT&T to begin unlocking off-contract iPhones this Sunday, April 8th

All I see on this forum is posts from foreigners who are not AT&T customers, yet somehow they feel entitled to an unlock. 

The announcement clearly states:

Beginning Sunday, April 8, we will offer qualifying customers the ability to unlock their AT&T iPhones. The only requirements are that a customer's account must be in good standing, their device cannot be associated with a current and active term commitment on an AT&T customer account, and they need to have fulfilled their contract term, upgraded under one of our upgrade policies or paid an early termination fee.

Anyone posting in this thread who is NOT an AT&T customer and does not have an AT&T account is one that helps  "create way too many posts".

(Do you not think it's funny to read posts from Brazilians claiming they bought their AT&T locked phone at a New York Apple Store in 2010?  What have they been doing with it ever since?  Using it as a paperweight???)

I can't help but wonder how much the flood of non-customers trying to get unlocks is gumming up the works for the legitimate customers ...

Really, people?  The steps for requesting an unlock have been posted numerous times in this thread.  Do we really need to keep asking?!  READ THE THREAD!!!

Im going through the same, I am not able to use the foreign sim, I got ahold of apple and they state that it does show unlocked at their end, but I still get the invalid sim card error. Apple opened a ticket for me.... 24 hours later I got ahold of the person who attended me yesterday and he still has no updates regarding this.

In other words, your not alone....

Call AT&T directly or use the online chat found on the bottom right of the support page. Your can not be under contract and your account in good standing.

If the device was bought back in 2010, it's quite possible that it's unlockable by software. But nothing better than a official unlock (as a jailbreak user, I know that).

The forum is OPEN to the PUBLIC and everyone (non-costumers, costumers, non-us residents) are allowed to register. So, don't blame others for the flood just because they're not AT&T costumers.

Hey man - well I decided to contact AT&T via the business chat, and resubmitted my unlock requests. I have successfully unlocked both of my phones now. I got the email instantly and the phones were unlocked right then and there.

Remove your imei and email address from this public forum. Next call AT&T directly and they can determine if you are eligible. Check the support page and the contact us section for the number.

I am still waiting for the email. I know that the iphone need to connect it to itunes to restore to complete the unlock process.

So my question is do I need to update the itunes and iphone to the latest firmware to get the unlock. Also my iphone is jailbroken, so does it need to restore it to original settings without jailbreak?

If you do a backup and restore, you will get the latest firmware. I would either be patient or call AT&T directly for an answer about when you will get notified that your phone is authoized to unlocked.

I just wanted to update anyone still following this thread.  I called and actually stuck with this through bad/lost connections for three hours, only to be disappointed.  I can't get my phone unlocked until my two years is up, even though I have upgraded to a different device and my iPhone 4 is no longer in use.

I had two representatives tell me that - they're clueless. The chat representatives were much more helpful and successfully unlocked my devices.

I apologize as I am sure this is covered somewhere, but I have not been able to find it.  I have 3 iphones purchased in the last 3 years and have relocated to india. AT&T charged me my early termination fee and closed my web account. I am unable to create a chat session to put in the request for an unlock. I have tried talking to three different customer representatives and they do not seem to understand that I am (a) a former customer and (b) no longer in the country and they do not even listen to what I am trying to say without a valid wireless number.

Is there any way I can email support or initiate a chat with no user id and password. I am really grateful for any useful advice.

You don't need to restore it. Just deactivate it with SAM or redsn0w, and then plug the phone into the computer with a foreign SIM. If the unlock was successful, you should get the congratulations message.

I'm outside of US, lost my At&t phone number (I've already got out of the 2 years contract, btw) and I want to unlock my iPhone 4. The problem is: I'm NOT able to call At&t since all the numbers redirect me to a local agency (I really don't know why) and I can't get the online chat working since I can't register my old (really old) At&t number with my account. So, the forum is the only way I have to talk to At&t people.

What I want to know is: what can I do to get my iPhone unlocked? I'm not american so my english isn't that well, which make things difficult when trying to call at&t (if at least I could) and I don't have an at&t number to register in my account.

I got my case number today afternoon, does that mean I am %100 eligiqble for an unlock?

I also read from other people that they just backedup and restore their iphones before they even got their confirmation email.

I've tried doing so twice today. So maybe I wasn't the lucky one who got their phones unlocked moments later. I guess I would have to wait couple hours, days, or weeks to get my email.

Does any body in here unlocked their phone within a few minutes, hours, or lastnight?

I would like to know, because im currently waiting for a chat representative for about 15 minutes now and just wanting to ask about my unlock email status. (If they can even tell me that info) but hey nothing wrong with asking.

I am on the same ship with you. Have a case number and waiting until April 16. It doesn't guarantee. I saw some said got unlock just an hour, and some said need to wait up to 72 hours.

Well I guess im just kinda happy I finally get to use this iphone 4 which been sitting collecting dust for more than 6 months or so.
