AT&T to begin unlocking off-contract iPhones this Sunday, April 8th

I'm done with my contract and what I'd really like is to have a data plan & per minute/use fees for phone calls and texting (I mostly use phone for data and for apps to organize my life, never come close to using phone minutes and don't text a lot.)  Would unlocking my phone allow me to do that?  or can I call ATT and arange that kind of change to my plan? 

Alternatively if I unlock can I set it up as more of a plain gophone for my son, without data?  If I don't have a data plan will it still work on wireless hotspots for email, etc.? and will apps work like it's an ipod touch?

you would not necessarily need to unlock it to continue to use it on ATT's network either as a regular phone or go-phone.  As a go-phone, you could look at getting a lower per month voice plan.  ATT does not officially support the iPhone 4 or 4S as a go-phone though but it can be done. Use Google for more informaiton.  However, I believe that even as a go-phone, some sort of data option is necessary so that may not help you out for your son.

You should probably get your iPhone unlocked for no other reason as to add value to it when it is time to sell.  An unlocked iPhone is worth more.  

If you decide not to have any cellular services on it, you can use it as an iPod touch and take advantage of wifi when it is available and you would not have any cost what so ever.

If you are not or have never been a customer, they are not going to help you unlock your iPhone.  You can always call ATT and ask them directly vs. trying to get the answer you want here which does not really matter as we are all customers.  The only way to get your iPhone unlocked is to call ATT and go through the process.

I bought the iphone 4 from AT&T when it came out in June 2010.  When my 2-year contract expires this june, is it possible to have AT&T unlock my phone, but also renew my contract with them?   Furthermore, once I am (hopefully) unlocked and still on the AT&T plan, can I then swap out the SIM card anytime I travel overseas?

this post will be merged with the 1500 post count thread on unlocking. To put it simply - get skype, call att custoemr service, supply the required information to see if the phone is eligible for unlock, the information required is one of the following

1. the phone number the iphone had when it was on att's network - or

2. the account number the phone was attached to when it was on att's network - or

3. a invoice showing you pay full retail price from an authorized dealer - note, ebay, amazon and other resale sites are not authorized dealers

Chances are slim to none of getting the phone unlocked if you cannot supply the required documentation, but go ahead and call to verify. Yes, calling is the only method.

Call AT&T to start the process but since you are not a customer, do not be surprised if they will not unlock it. Use Skype.

Once your 2 year contract is completed in June 2012, you DO NOT have to renew your contract to continue to use AT&T network.

 If you don't want to upgrade to a new phone, you just continue using your current Sim Card on a month to month basis.

And after you have completed your contract, then YES you can apply to have your Iphone unlocke for use with any other carrier's GSM sim.

Read the guidlines that are found throughout this thread.  But basically you need to call ATT as that is how the process starts.  You need to be a past or present customer or prove you bought the iPhone at full price from an authorized dealer.  You can use Skype but if you do not qualify, you have a very nice iPod Touch!

No one is going to give you their account to help you as their account is private and the iPhone needs to have been registered to the account used to unlock it. You need to contact the person who sold that phone to you and have them do it.  I would sell the iPhone and buy one that works for you from the carrier you use.

If you asking to have your iPhone unlocked, you need to call ATT directly.  You must have been or are an ATT customer otherwise you are probably out of luck.  The phone number is below and you can use skype to keep your calling costs down.

Unless you have or had an account with ATT or you bought the iPhone at full price from an authorized dealer, you are out of luck.  Reach out to the seller and see what they can do.  You can always call the number below and see if by some chance you get lucky.  Use Skype to keep your costs of the call low.

Call AT&T via Skype. Only they can determine if your phone is eligible. You may need to contact the seller as you don't have an account with AT&T.
