I've had my iPhone, and AT&T account, for two days now. The first day, I was able to send an email from the phone. Now, I cannot. I have my own SMTP server which for other clients is functioning perfectly. However, my iPhone claims that the connection failed. I also enabled the AT&T SMTP server (cwmx.com) as a failover; the connection to that server is also reportedly failing.

Does anyone know why this is the case? Has anyone else experienced it? Did I just make a big mistake by giving up my Blackberry/T-Mobile account?

There could be various reasons why you can't connect. Some do not have anything to do with AT&T or the iPhone. Did you go and see if your ISP or Email provider are doing maintenance? Did you try delete the email account and redo your account? If you think it's a big mistake then it is a big mistake. Only you know for yourself if it is or not. I told countless people before. Never pick the phone, and always pick the provider. Phones go in and out of style like the Olsen twins, or Paris Hilton.

Connect to a Wi-Fi network and see if you can send email using your SMTP server.

If that works, it could be an issue with either the SMTP server or AT&T's network.

If it fails, it is definitely an issue with the SMTP server.

It would have to be both if that was the case as he has it setup as a failsafe. Time Warner has a filter that doesn't let SMTP server to be used off network. So if you are using wifi that is associated with Comcast you will get that error with the SMTP server, and his address would look for the secondary server.

My wife had a similar issue last night. smtp server fail.
try this. turn off phone wait 10 seconds then turn back on.
