My iPhone will not go into silent mode. I've flipped the switch on the side a thousand times back and forth. I leave it on red and it still plays sound when I get a call or text message. Help?

it doesn't immediately show the icon with the line through it. what it does is after a while that icon starts popping up constantly. if vibrate is turned on, it vibrates as well as displays the icon for silent mode. i think i have software issue and not just a settings issue.

Have your reset your iPHone? You should reset it almost daily.
Second - if that doesn't clear it out, restore your iPhone -- sync up to iTunes and when done, use the restore link. That should clear out the problem by rewriting all the most recent software on your iPhone.
If that doesn't work, then it is time to contact Apple support for repair.
