That surely sucks not having a phone.  I just talked to Att and they state that they should have more stock by the 29th.  Is anyone else hearing that?  I dont think it is at all fair that someone who did not pre order the phone can walk into Att on Tuesday and get one ahead of someone like me who pre ordered one on the 15th!!  Let me know what you guys and girls are hearing as a ship date if you get

Yes, same here ordered on the 15th but then they had to verify some information and switched my order to June 19th.  I asked them if that would delay me and would I still hold my place in line as a June 15th order.  Yes of course they said.  I am seeing now that is baloney.

All they really do is tell you what you want to hear to get you off the phone, relay the same crap to everyone else and get you nowhere.

Pretty common really, beyond just AT&T.

I've seen excuses ranging from AT&T receives phones on Tuesdays and Thursdays to be shipped the next day, to we're shipping all orders on Monday, to the most honest answer "could be a while".

As far as I can tell, AT&T Premier is not equipped with the right information and they're just feeding you a line to get you off the phone.

I attempted to reverse engineer the process, and here's what I have so far:

Premier is a very small group designed to handle business accounts. They send their orders to the main AT&T fulfillment house just like everyone else in AT&T.

Typically hot items are offered to Premier first: example is the Blackberry 9700, which sold to Premier customers a week or two before regular AT&T customers could buy it. However, that order needs to clear Premier first,and then be sent to fulfillment next. Your order date is when it is received by fulfillment... the Premier order date is MEANINGLESS.

In the case of the iPhone 4 pre-order, everyone has the same priority, except regular AT&T customers have an advantage. Their orders are sent directly to fulfillment. Premier orders like ours are managed by the smaller Premier department first, and then only after everything is cleared is it transmitted to fulfillment. So even though I ordered on the 15th at 8am on Premier, the actual date of transmission to fulfillment was 6/22.

Now here's the thing... let's say the main fulfillment is overwhelmed. Just because the Premier system is up and your order is done, it doesn't mean that your order is transmitted to fulfillment. So now there are tens of thousands of Premier orders, some of which have crossed into fulfillment (e.g. you can track it on the main site), some that aren't transmitted and some that were transmitted but corrupted in transmission. I think what happened all last week is that Premier folks manually went through and reconciled these. As this happened, your orders updated accordingly until you could see it in the AT&T main order tracking site.

So anyway, that's what I have so far.

If you want to cancel your order and buy in store on the 29th:

I have some fantastic news.

I just got off the phone with AT&T Customer Service and they have successfully cancelled my pre-order and set it up to where I can purchase my iPhone in store on the 29th.

Please note, I am porting a number over from Verizon, not upgrading, so I can't speak to what happens if you are upgrading.

Basically I called them and explained to them that I know they are trying to best to fulfill a lot of order, but I pre-ordered my phone so that I could have it before it went on sale the 29th.  I explained that I'm not calling to complain about how long it is taking, I understand that it is a difficult logistical issue to deal with, but what I want to do, if at all possible is cancel my order so I can go in store on the 29th and purchase my iPhone and not have to wait on one to be shipped to me and then return the shipped one for a refund (minus 10% restocking).

I couldn't have asked more from this CSR.  She called the porting department to make sure that nothing would go wrong with having to port the line over on different equipment (may require a manager at the store there as not all employees have the proper access to make the change of switching the ordered iPhone hardware over to the new in store iPhone over on my account).  She then called the apple store where I will be camping out to make sure there will be managers or employees with the proper access in store that morning to make sure they will be able to work with me.

She then cancelled my online order, and just warned me to make sure I was at the store early enough to get a phone because now my pre-order online was cancelled (I plan on camping out the night before as soon as I get off work about 5:30 pm), and I received my email confirming the cancellation of my pre-order.

Moral of the story, call, be courteous, and they CAN and WILL help you.  If they tell you they cannot cancel your order that isn't necessarily true, ask to speak to internet sales and then ask them to attempt to cancel your order.  

To save yourself some time here is the number for internet sales (866) 391-0749.  I would call that number first as they are the people who can truly help you.

Again, if you are courteous to them, they absolutely can and will help you.  Please, remember to thank them as well.  My CSR said I was by far the nicest person she has talked to in the past couple days and she was more than happy to help me as much as she could.

I ordered through AT&T cause I couldnt' get through Apple cause the server couldn't complete the order at 7AM on the 15th.  Still in progress since the 17th.  Unbelievable. 

Yes guys word is from the stores they will have iphone 4's on the 29th.  I also saw someone thread that if you have a preorder you can go to the front of the line, but that was on the thread and sounds to good to be true. 

They wont let me cancel either I tried that.  Very close to calling the CC company and canceling they did say if I can buy it from ATT I can just send the other one back when it arrives and be refunded then.

Well my questions is this.  If they have phones to sell from the stores on the 29th, then they should have phones to fill the preorders.....Right.  This logic makes sense to me!  I will be livid if this is not true!

Of course it makes sense, but remember who you are dealing with.  I just called two official AT&T stores and they both said they cannot and will not fill a preorder made over the phone on Tuesday.  I would suggest calling your local store and they will probably say the same thing.

Same thing happened to me.  New customer porting 2 numbers from Verizon family plan to ATT family plan.  I only got one of my phones, the other is still in progress.  I activated the one phone, and they ported BOTH numbers thus canceling my Verizon account, making my non ATT phone dead.  I was on the phone for literally 4 hours, back and forth trying to get this fixed.  I finally got it fixed, but took way too much of my time.  There is no word to describe the incompetence with this company.

To tell you the truth I feel for you but I've been with AT&T for two years now and really haven't had any problems other than this BS with the iphone pre orders.........which I can't particular blame on just them its also apple and all of the hype machine.........but not good for business.  I haven't had any miscelanous charges or things that I've had on Sprint and Verizon and really have had good customer service with the company and at the stores.  If that makes you feel any better about switching from Verizon.

Just got off phone with ATT.  Orders placed in this range will be received "as late as July 7th".  A far cry from the "as early as June 24th" in the confirmation email, but at least its an update I guess.
