There is no way to remove them. We all have them.

I think you are talking about channels, not apps. Apps are what you install on Smartphones or Tablets.
You can add or remove channels from your Favorites. One way to add and remove favorites is to press the Enter/Zoom button on the bottom right corner of the remote, then arrow-down to Favorites. This will let you view and change your Favorites list. There are several other ways to view, add, or delete Favorites.

Those channels are called applications and they can not be removed from the guide. You are correct that you can set up favorites and leave them out though.

Not a biggie but I am curious where you see any channels called applications.

I believe all the channels in the nineties & possibly others run as an app. That is they do not immediately show a picture. They load and run interactively.

Now I see what you mean. I did not check out channels [1]423 and [1]621 and assumed they were ordinary TV channels, but now I see that they are interactive "apps" like those in the 90s.

Channels, Apps, Applications, Interactive, Mary or John....doesn't really matter what you call them. You can't get rid of them or hide them in the guide.

Here is another thread where this has been discussed at some length:
http://forums.att.com/t5/Applications/How-do-you-h
In the final analysis, AT&T has decided that it does not want the email spammers to have a corner on the the spam market and are trying to compete with them by generating sales revenue from products promoted by their spam advertising to its paying customers, whether they like it or not, using its reasonably pricey pay TV service. Of course you can just choose not to click on these "App" channels, just like with spam in your email box.
But while you have the ability to opt out of spam email delivered by legitimate businesses (as required by law), you have no such option with the spam-crap delivered by AT&T U-verse. And as many have noticed, it is really annoying to have to channel surf through these "App" channels.
But you know how spam merchants are, they like that you are annoyed by this, as that means they are succeeding in forcing you to notice them. Unfortunately, the spam merchant here is our pay TV vendor, AT&T U-verse.
Make no mistake about it. This is first and foremost about the shopping channels. AT&T does not like it when people hide their spam channels, so now as a first step towards really fouling up the whole channel line-up, these channels are being prohibited from being hidden.
The people from AT&T have been unwilling to take responsibility for this policy change, or to explain these actions. A few months ago, some of the local paid shills here on this board had originally tried to insist that this was a programming error that would be fixed soon. And then U-verse added another shopping channel to the no-hide list, after having added other channels which could be hidden. So, that was the end of that line of misleading talk.
This is all anyone from AT&T has told us about this. And that was clearly not correct.
