I don't have an ATT data plan on my phone (BOLD) but I would like to access the internet through my wireless router at home. I have done everything correctly (I think) and I am able to see the SSID and even "connect" to the network. However, when I open the browser it defaults back to the ATT Network and I start racking up the charges.
Router is a BELKIN "N" router and it is NOT set up as an access point. All other devices (PS3, I-touch, PSP, laptops) connect to the network and surf the net quite easily. I tried to diable the ATT network but then it says that the "radio" is off and wont do anything.
Please help if you can. THANKS!!!!

I believe AT&T makes you have a data plan for that functionality to work.

I don't have it with me. But when in the browser, hit the menu and there is a setting in there to let it prefer WIFI. So once the wifi is set as the prefered, you should be connecting via WIFI when even t is connected to a WIFI router.

No, AT&T does not require customers to have a BB data plan, in order to use free WiFi, on a WiFi capable handset. ![]()

Open browser, hit the BB menu key, options, (browser configuration) change to Hotspot browser, (general properties) change default browser to "Hotspot browser", then hit save.........

I can turn my network off and browse just fine off of wifi.It sounds to me as if he doesn't have something quite right with the wifi setup and so the device is defaulting to data services.

maybe that's what I was doing wrong....i didn't turn the network off!! That's how the charges occured, silly me.
You'll have to let us know how it goes. It does take time to get use to a blackberry cuz it has so much to offer.

lpudas, do you have a data block on your account, or is keeping the network turned off on your device enough for WiFi to work, without actually connecting to AT&T's data side?

The data block takes out all the guess work and or accidents from happening. If you don't have a data plan then you don't need to have the data service on. With the data service blocked then that even eliminates the possible unwanted things sent your way unasked for that you end up having to pay for. I did not like having to try to remember if it was turned on or off or if something happened to turn it on and I thought it was off, etc. I got billed at one point for two things sent to me that I did not ask for or even know who sent them. So I had it turned off and now I don't have to worry. If you change and need a data plan you can always make a call and have them turn it back on. So that is food for thought.
Thanks. This confirms what I read on other sites.

I do it mostly to see if I can because I've seen other people ask the same question. I always run both but I'm sure when I'm home its running off of wifi since my signal isn't strong due to one of the towers in town having been damaged when we got hit by a tornado. It's a curiousity kind of thing. But yes, when I turn off network, it browses fine off of wife. I come here and read posts and learn a bit (what I understand lol). That's a pretty easy maneuver though to turn off data services and run wifi. To be truthful, I don't do "internet" much on my phone. My eyes are too old to read what's on the phone (I wonder if a storm wouldn't help with this issue but that's moot since AT&T doesn't carrry the storm) and my laptop is much easier and faster to play on the internet. I know how to enlarge fonts etc. but then you could get a sprained thumb from scrolling so much. I do do a little facebook and read some of the simpler emails and I do send emails (right now internet is down where I work) out of necessity.
I am such a dipsy doodle. I edited once because I realized I hadn't completely answered your question and now I'm editing to tell you why I edited.

Thanks for the expanation, lpudas. LOL, next time just highlight the first "Message edited by", and click on the backspace button, then no one will know how many times you actually edited your post, as it will only show the last time you did it........ I just did that with your post here.

I'm having huge trouble getting my BBBold to access my wireless without a BB data plan. Can you tell me - do all your apps work when you do get it to connect? Have you been able to get it to connect? Do you have Google email app for your BB loaded and does it work? Many thanks. I've called At&T 5 times to confirm that you need a data plan and they say YES. BB tech support even says YES also. Ahhhhh.
Thanks!
Mark

E-mail is pushed to a BB via RIM servers, and without a BB data plan, you will not be able to use this on your BB. Therefore, the AT&T Rep. as well as Tech support were correct.
