Does anybody have this problem where your phone will go into searching for service and then all of a sudden go into SOS mode on the phone? Did look at coverage maps and everywhere this happens I have good service according to the at&t map.

Unfortunately, AT&T does not guarantee coverage anywhere. While the map may show good coverage, in actuality, it may be rather poor. I would go to an AT&T store and try your SIM in a different phone to see if that has better signal. If so, trade your phone in on a warranty claim. Sounds like the antenna could be messed up in yours. It happens.

No service is usually indicated by a "X" or an "!" where the antenna indicator is located. If it says SOS, it could mean sometimes that the SIM card is bad or not seated properly. Check the retainer for the SIM card to make sure it is locked into place and not allowing the SIM card to move around. And as said previously, try the SIM in another phone to see if it happens in that phone, as well. You can always get a new SIM from AT&T store, if needed.

I consistently get SOS in certain areas of poor/no coverage.

Coverage maps are pretty much meaningless. They're based on tower and other equipment placement and not on any real world coverage testing. Real world coverage can be affected by many many factors that aren't accounted for by the coverage maps.
